Major Gig string break

This one goes back to 1987 I think. I was in a metal band that was doing ok on the local scene. We got the opening slot for Anthrax and Metal Church at a large venue on Long Island NY. We had a lot of trouble with the guys from anthrax taking a long time to sound check so we were not going to be able to play but the guys from Metal Church told us to use thier Drumset and just throw our amps up there, so we were pretty jacked about playing so we did. Opening song my first hit was a loud open A string... it snapped on the first hit. Since we didn't have time to bring in all our gear my backup bass was still locked in the car. Ended up playing the whole 12 song set with no A string..... It wasn't easy. I wasn't much of a guy to just sit on the root notes, my hero was Steve Harris at the time so my bass lines tended to be all over to say the least. Anyway about a year later my drummer read an article with Anthrax and they had mentioned the situation of the bass player finishing the gig with 3 strings and just playing right through it. I never saw the article though.

so when you're handed lemons, beat them, smash them, stomp them, then throw some sugar on top and call it lemonade.....

Dang! Way to hang in there! About 80% of what we play is in A, and I'd be in real trouble if that string broke. Sounds like you got a burst of inspiration and pulled it off.

Way to persevere!

I had a mildly similar situation. Broke an "A" string (are they the ones most likely to break???) at the beginning of the bass intro to "Brown-Eyed Girl". Kinda the signature of the song--and had to finish on 3 strings. Played the lick on one string. And not very well...

But we were able to take a break after that song to re-string.

That's why I carry spares of EVERYTHING to a gig.

That's awesome. Of course you lost a string, and couldn't play as well, but you got remembered!!

I broke the nut on my G string on the first note of a song on Mon night. Played the whole tune with an extended solo with just 3 strings!!! It just makes you think a bit more but you have to muscle through!!!
