Make me look metal

So, I'm in a heavy alternative/metal band now. We're going to start gigging soon (have a show lined up with a big local band and a good touring band from Australia). I feel like we all play our roles fairly well, but none of us really look the part. I know that look is a big part of bands (people do see with their eyes) so I was wondering about small changes I could make to look the scene.

I don't do glam or hardcore. I like to stress the heavy alternative part. We don't need face paint, spandex, teased hair, or anything like that. I'm just looking for different hair styles or clothes or things like that.

You may laugh when you see the pictures. I'm 15 and look about 13, and don't weigh a pound over 115. I think this is where my problems come from. As far as my hair, I'm going to get some kind of straightening thing done to it that will straighten it for a while. Nothing else has worked so far.

Attached is a picture of me. Have at it.

Great advice, however... metal is my favorite kind of music and I'd like to at least try the look. I don't know it's not me yet

That's my every day. Somehow it doesn't quite cut it on me though.

This is us on stage. I can't take me seriously.

if you honestly wanna dress like the "stereotypical metal head". You need a black band tee, dark wash jeans(very fitted at least but a slimmer jean would be best), and then a pair of chucks.oh and ditch the hat

Easy. Lose the jacket (because it's going to be wicked hot and constricting) and move around the stage a ton, work the crowd. It's about the energy more than the clothes IMHO.

Got the shirt, got the jeans, got the chucks. I think I'm wearing the chucks in one of those pictures... and I've been told by a lot of bands to keep the hat. That's one thing I'm not willing to get rid of

I dressed up a little bit, as it was a school competition. The one with the full band is closer to my normal dress.

Why conform to everyone else's mold? Be original - be yourself.

I say this with all seriousness and without trying to hurt any feelings but this is a joke right? How do you look metal? If you have ask how to look metal, you are not metal. Metal is a way of life, an attitude, a movement, its not a fashion statement. You can go to Hot Topic and "look metal" for about $100 of crappy clothing. Its all in your persona, the way to act, the person you are. This is not to be fake or try to be something you are not. If a jacket and funky hat is what you want your image to be, go for it. Thats who you are. Mighty Mighty Bosstones go with the full suit action and they are the big guns of the Ska Punk genre.

Play well, play loud, and play hard - That will be more metal then some store bought fresh black Metallica shirt and $90 stonewash jeans with $150 sneakers. I just show up at a show with whatever I had on that day. A pair of old cheap jeans with a Hooker Headers T-shirt or some Harley shirt or whatever, thats because I wear that everyday. Heck I can have a pair of shorts and a BMW t-shirt, who cares.

You are young and are trying to fit in. It does not matter what others think. Play your music and play it well. You never know, someone might say "That dude kills on the Bass and dresses snazzy" - That will be your identity, not something you are trying to create to blend in with others for the sake of "Looking Metal". Just be YOU.

Good luck to you dude and rock on!

The guy in the pic looks about 75.

Lose the hat. ..and that baggy open button shirt thing.

+1 to jeans & Tshirt
+2 to black, (kinda overdone, but you wanted to look metal)
+3 Lose the hat.

Good luck.

Haha, yes, I was mostly joking when I posted this. I say mostly because I was honestly willing to try whatever TB had in mind. But if I was concerned about image, I would have done that long before I had a band.

Still, though, if someone can come up with something fun for me to try, go ahead. This was never meant to be taken that seriously =p

Sorry, you could not be further from metal (and closer to a golf course) than with that hat.Hey, if you're still rockin when you're 75, then wear the hat.

No, I want the advice. I just won't lose the hat. lol

I expected to get lots of over-the-top suggestions in this thread. It appears I've misjudged TB for once. Anyways, continue with your advice, but have a little more fun with it. No need to get up in arms.
