I guess the story was paul came in for the interview and gave Howrd a signed Hofner for for his Birthday.

My take;

Howards staff probably ran down to Manny's bought a Hofner Icon had paul sign it and pretend it was a big deal

The story is that Sirius execs bought the bass and had Paul sign/present it. I don't know whether it was a lefty or whether it was a regular hofner or one of the cheaper models. I do know that it was never suggested that Paul was giving Howard one of his personally owned Hofners.

IMO, it's a pretty big deal when someone of Sir Paul's stature presents you with something, even if it wasn't something he owned himself. Even if the person on the recieving end is someone as famous as HS is.

It was an actual Hofner that they bought, not a cheapy or one of his personal basses. It was a righty, but they mentioned that it looked old. Is Hofner selling "reliced" basses?

It was a righty but nonetheless it was signed by sir Paul, so it makes it really valuable in my opinion.
