The Mediocre Bassist Club, pt. 2: Bigger! (Better, not so much.)

Sign in to disble this ad
OK, folks - the party has moved over here.

Here is the link to part 1:
The Mediocre Bassist Club.

One thing that bears repeating: If you want a number, please say so - “Number, please” or something to that effect. People sometimes like to come here and weigh in, which is cool. And when I give someone a number to the Mediocre Bassist Club when they didn’t actually want one - well, they don’t always take that as a compliment. (Even though it is meant as one.)

Here is the very first post of Part 1:

Don't get me wrong. Bands love me. I have good rhythm and a good ear. I groove like eff. I love to play. There appears to be no limit to the (simple but funky) bass lines I can come up with. What I can't do is (1) play a solo worth a damn or (2) slap worth a damn; and nothing says Monster Bass Player like a 20-minute slap solo. That's not me. May never be.

I try to look like I *could* play a 20-minute slap solo, but, after doing that for like 15 years, I'm over it, beyond it. I'm evolved, and I know what's really important. That's how I come off, I hope. But in truth, what's really important is all that I can do.

I have taken exactly one (1) lesson.

Flame me, sure, yes, please. But, also, those kindred spirits out there, fess up. Stand up and be counted!

Okay, resistance has proven futile. I belong. Number please.

Plus, I get to support you as the first post in the second part. Classic bass; support role.

I am unsure of whether to be proud, or ashamed, that so many of us revel in mediocrity.

But until I can make up my mind, I will just continue trying new things.

Not sure I'm reveling...in fact I may be aspiring.

I've been playing since I was in the 8th grade, around 1974. I was a great beginner - but haven't gone far since then.

You want time, I got time. You want a good harmonic foundation, I'm your guy. You want somebody who can pick up the chord structure of a song real quick, look no further.

You want somebody with licks, with flash, with a bunch of different sounds, and a buttload of gear? Sorry.

Ask me what I do and I'll tell you - "I play bass."

Gimme a numbah.

Whoop! My new Dingwall Combustion is here. I like it a LOT. It is fairly light weight (big consideration when you have tendonitis in your shoulders) and I've found the fanned frets actually feel more natural / easier to play than the parallel frets on my other basses. But the quality of my equipment is now definately above the current quality of my ability to play. One more reason to get back in the woodshed!!

I always felt that bass players were a humble group in general. This thread sure supports that notion!

Can't slap, don't solo, but I can hold the groove, anticipate the changes and been doing it for almost 40 years, and after seeing many great players, I feel of all the clubs on TB I qualify for this club. I'll take a number.

Number please,

Just your average guy that practices the songs enough to play 'em at the next gig, and is pretty solid if he doesn't drink too much...
