Talking The Mediocre Bassist Club, pt. 3: MBC3

Sign in to disble this ad
Well, I still haven’t learned to slap. Amazingly, neither have a bunch of other people. Even more amazingly, we still love to play, and it shows! TM

Here is Part 1:
The Mediocre Bassist Club.

And here is Part 2:
The Mediocre Bassist Club, pt. 2: Bigger! (Better, not so much.)

OUR MISSION: Our fellow TBers have written many worthy manifestos over the years, but FWIW this is the very first post:

Quote:
I was born to play the bass. I was not necessarily born to play it great. After 4 years of playing daily, I can barely handle myself in a Guitar Center. Nine-year-olds school me.

Don't get me wrong. Bands love me. I have good rhythm and a good ear. I groove like eff. I love to play. There appears to be no limit to the (simple but funky) bass lines I can come up with. What I can't do is (1) play a solo worth a damn or (2) slap worth a damn; and nothing says Monster Bass Player like a 20-minute slap solo. That's not me. May never be.

I try to look like I *could* play a 20-minute slap solo, but, after doing that for like 15 years, I'm over it, beyond it. I'm evolved, and I know what's really important. That's how I come off, I hope. But in truth, what's really important is all that I can do.

I have taken exactly one (1) lesson.

Flame me, sure, yes, please. But, also, those kindred spirits out there, fess up. Stand up and be counted!

<Braveheart voice> Who's with me!!!! </Braveheart voice>

...

..but you didn’t all just flame me back whence I came! Instead, you stood up and were counted ... and counted ... awesome.

A little housekeeping: Always always feel free to post and say hi or anything. But if you want a number, ask for one by name! (E.g. “Can I get a number please?”) If it takes a week or even sometimes two for me to issue numbers, don’t fret (*rimshot*). You are already in and just waiting for the paperwork. I will get to it, unless I am dead and my cats are eating me. After I issue a couple outstanding numbers I will post The Master List of Mediocre Bass Players in the World, for you frugal producers and bandleaders who want to put together a band with 700 bass players in it but don’t want to pay too much.

And thank you guys for all the well wishes and support for my audition tomorrow. We’ll see. What I lack in talent, I try to make up in preparation. I just hope to have fun. I will keep y’all posted.

MBC 4 life!

And now, a couple numbers for the guys who, Bruce Willis style, slid under the blast doors just before they came crashing down on MBC2 ...

My story is similar to Bullitt5135's, and why I decided to request membership.

I'm a singer, songwriter, guitarist in that order. I've played bass guitar when needed for demos, but never considered myself a bassist. The closest I got to soloing was when I got an eight-measure spotlight on "I Can't Make You Love Me" with a '78 Fender P-Bass (that I still regret selling..sniff). But, that was a long time ago and I didn't pick up a nice, heavy slab of wood again until about two years ago.

A good friend who was taking drum lessons asked if I'd start playing with him to help him get better. I got another friend to join us on guitar and somehow the bass was back in my hands. After a few months, something clicked. It has really expanded my musical vocabulary and introduced me to music theory in a way that I'd never expected.

I'm not a groove master and can't slap, but I can find my way around scales pretty well and still manage to sing most tunes at the same time (although, "Vertigo" and "Day Tripper" kick my @$$).

So, mediocre? Yes. But lovin' every note of it.
Nice. I found my way in here pretty randomly as well. I was a frontman and a lyricist back in the 90s, after which I took a long haitus (only noodling around with a keyboard and a 4-track at home). About 6 years ago my old bass player asked me to buy a bass he wanted so he could buy it off of me when he had the money. (It was a going out of business sale.) I did, but when he came and got it I missed having a bass so much!!! I was hooked. To this day I can not describe how much fun playing the bass is. And here I don’t have to.

Thread #3! Great!

Still can't slap worth a darn. However, I've started to learn pull-offs and hammer-ons and even some harmonics; doing decent with them too. But slapping - My aim with my right hand is still so bad it ain't funny.

I've also actually been able to play in front of people and did a decent job of it, which has helped my self-confidence quite a bit.

Despite those advances, I'm still middle of the road mediocre, and probably doomed to stay that way... What's important is that I still get a kick out of playing, and I'm now decent enough that I can enjoy practicing

I think it went very well. They asked me back for another session. Started out a little rough - next time, I am going to insist on a warmup. They started me out on their fastest song! I asked to come back to it and when we did a couple hours later it sounded good.

I think it is safe to say that I pick up songs pretty quickly. Regular pop songs at least. We ran the four they sent me mp3s of and 6 or 7 others. Never heard the 6 or 7 others before earlier tonight and by the second or third time we played each we just sounded like a band.

I liked them. These things are always a little awkward, and unavoidably so. You're doing something kind of intimate with strangers. But, given that, I thought the chemistry was good.

The drummer loved me. Called me "a real player". That's kind of the most important thing.

But, they asked me back, and I agreed to come. Maybe we will work together. (It's more of a professional band than a friend band, I think.) All three of them are good musicians, and the fact that I was able to hang with them today when I was without a doubt my bass instructor's least talented student, counting the children, is why I started this club in the first place.

Thanks again, all of you, for your support! I thought of you guys during the audition.

Congrats! That's great news. Good luck in Round 2.

That's why you're the "Bomb."

You give us all hope that we can achieve excellence in mediocrity. ~wistful sigh~

I'm back in and reloaded. Still can't slap, and don't care if I ever learn.

Adam Bomb, you're my idol.

Congrats, Adam. Auditions can be rough.

Well, I want in, even though I have a B. A. in music theory, have regularly played bass professionally for the last 23 years, and am one of the better players in my region, far as I can tell. But, if I compare myself to the whole world of players I'm just in the middle somewhere. I was also in the middle of the bass section when I played with the philharmonic. But, I've been in 15 bands since 1964, many on guitar, but turned over to bass in 1988. I've fronted a mainliner before and played with some famous folks. But...

I cannot slap, and don't care. And I'm not a fancy player, just enjoying the basic parts. Expression and feeling the groove is where it's at for me. I serve the song and my own passion for feeling what I play. At least in that respect I excel. I know theory, but don't wear a sign that says so. A humble bassist, to be sure.

A clarinet teacher once told me that of all his students, even though I needed some technical improvements, I had the best tone of all. Story of my life, things suck, but I have a good tone, though. LOL, we all must aspire to greatness, for how else will we get anywhere?

Hey, mediocre is ok by me. It's where most of life is anyway.

Bomb, man, that's great news! Kudos on that.

I feel happy to tell you that I improved (maybe for God's powers or something) on my last gig: A Beatles tribute.

You know, I can't sing and play songs with hard basslines at the same time, but this time I did ok.

One of the guitarists that were supposed to be in the band for the gig quit like 5 days before because he didn't have time to rehearse... whatever. He was supposed to sing along with me Don't Let Me Down but of course it didn't happen so I had to sing it. The thing is that the part that says "I'm in love for the first time..." has a dodgy bass-lyrics form (for me) but I managed myself to do it and BOOM! the crowd is cheering.

Thanks for reading.
P.S. I still can't slap or tap well...

You did good Bomb! An inspiration to all of us. (and I think I know what band that is - at least I'm pretty sure I saw their ad. I was a little intimidated by it.)

We auditioned a singer yesterday. She's got a terrific voice but.....she only wants to sing psychedelic songs, preferably from 1967-71! And really wants to riff/improvise on the lyrics, rather than singing what's written. So it's not going to work out. I don 't want to sing anymore 'cause my voice is going.

I'm learning it: first through the final pages of Friedland's Hal Leonard method, now from the first pages of Chris Kringel's Funk Bass book. And every now and then I produce decent slap and pop sounds. What still frightens me is the impression that I'm treating my instrument roughly, especially while popping.

Well, anyway, we're off for the third round, so let's share those audition and stage moments... preferrably the good ones
