Yes. Not nearly as easy as it sounds. Eighth notes can be a b*tch. And keeping track of the subtle difference in kick drum patterns is also not a cinch.

How did I miss this for so long. I am a bassist and I am mediocre. Started playing bass when there were 4 guitarist in the band. I figured when the "split" occurred it would be one or two of the guitars that would leave. Ended up being bass, drums, guitar and vocals.

Never had a bass lesson but watched some you tube. Got a bent pinky (hereditary and it bends towards the other fingers) meaning that i have a short span and can't do one finger per fret. Then after reading some posts on hear realised that it was playing the right note at the right time that mattered (still working on that) not which finger you used.

I need a number and would love 1515 if its available.

Thanks. The hat allows me to sound better on bass. Honest!

Ah..never thought that the had would make me sound better, i figured it was one of
a) allow them not to see who was playing bass
b) divert them from listening to the bass
c) make me feel so cool i dont care what i sound like

and

i just gotta get a hat!

Actually, beyond the blues player look and simply liking hats, it shields my eyes from stage lights. So, it does have a valid utility function.

Yesterday we had our last rehearsal before a week-long Christmas break. There is a slight improvement that can be noticed in how the songs are clicking into place. We are dropping some songs out of the list that do not seem to belong, or that get too repetitive (the straight rock-and-roll parts). Besides, the singerbabe can't make the gig so we have to stay to the original all-male concept.

Three mandolin songs and all the rock and roll in the set list is hard on my left forefinger so I am lacing it every day with some ointment to ease the inflammation. the break probably will only do me good.

15 days to go!

That is so important and so difficult as the one you drop is always going to be someone's favourite. The other problem is tha song that everyone hates but goes down well. We used to do "Spirit in the Sky". We all hated playing it but it went down as well as any in the set.

Hmmm, I wonder if I qualify. As the sig says, I don't play so much as operate a bass. Although on the plus side I can play a root like nobodies business. I know a major scale, a minor scale and am working on a pentatonic. Played (Or rather "Operated") in a band about 20 years ago then put the bass down. Picked it up a few weeks ago and yup, mediocrity has some serious staying power. I play with a pick, I like four on a side headstocks and pointy basses and have no use for more than four strings. If your mediocrity can't shine on four strings, what makes you think five (Or God forbid six or even eight) will do you even better? I play gladly through a Behringer BX1200 and actually like the tone, in my band days I played and liked Crate.

On the plus side I own three times as many fedoras as basses, two felts and a straw. I also own a pretty sharp drovers hat. A possible negative may be my staggering collection of ballcaps.

Do I qualify for a number, or do I need to raise my personal bar to achieve mediocrity?

We will have no raising of any bars around here (playing in them is OK); that's what mediocrity is all about! The purveyor of numbers will be by eventually to bless your presence in the club.

Lowering the bar would be more like it. For example, I am a new bassist who can barely follow progressions on the root in public, and yet Bomb gave a hard time about sheet music and lessons. So let that be a lesson to us all!

Merry Christmas and welcome to the club, PipeRain.

Still mediocre, but have taken up wearing a hat. Once, a brown fedora with a bluejay feather, but usually my red plaid Stormy Kromer.

Finally had a get together today, minus drummer who put the thing together. I was mistaken, they were going to keep the bandname but it seems like the regular bassist is goneburger and he was the only original member of that band, the singer is new, it's now nearly all covers and the percussion section is all gone, what a mess, how did I get suckered into this?

It's all easy stuff so I'm doing the gig and that will be that. It looks like we may be able to get everyone together for a couple of hours on Sunday night.

No, I'm not handing in my mediocre card.

It's a jam band, my jam chops are pretty solid, maybe even better in some ways than their regular guy. Unlike him I can't slap to save my life, as I told the drummer, them's some big boots to fill. He's an animal, gets all over the fretboard like Jaco's lost cousin. "No problem". So I said ok.

Then he tells me they are having a guest chick sing covers as well. This is disturbing as I have enough trouble learning covers quickly without having to learn them in a new key as well. It's 8pm now and no setlist has been emailed.
