Music Appreciation rant.

Sign in to disble this ad
Just got back from my school's Potter Idol, a take on American Idol. This is simply a rant, because I have never needed a good one until now.

My trio, Threeflow, played Cissy Strut by the Meters. PErfect rendition, though we threw in some solos and even a bass solo. We played it perfectly, and my solo was the best I have played one yet.

The Judges:
1. Why did you play that? Funk is dead.
2. Too repetitive, it put me to sleep.
3. Why was there no singing? Very boring, and not in a true Potter Idol spirit.
4. (one of my best friends, who plays jazz and is going to school to major in music) I totally disagree. You guys were amazing, and I could listen all day.

I guess my rant is just that people dont appreciate music like they should. The girl that one sang out of key, but sang Taylor Swift. The second place kids sang some song consisting of three chords on guitar, and a chorus and verse by, I think, Red Jumpsuit Apparatus

Im not saying those are bad artists, Im not one to judge, but I just dont feel that people are appreciative of the basics.

We didnt even get top 3.. We worked like crazy, performed amazingly, only to be shot down by the judges, whom influenced the crowds vote..

[/rant]

EDIT: HERE is a video my pops made. Its not the best quality, seeing thats it a cheap video, but its all he could pull off. Sorry for the quality guys.

Were the judges musicians or teachers or what?

Instrumentals are wasted on non-musicians sometimes................

IMHO,YMMV,IHOP,ETC.

what, what, what??? Cissy Strut is a great tune. But then again if it was in the spirit of american Idol you really have to dumb it down and appeal to the masses just like American Idol, it's a popularity contest based on looks and appealing to the unappreciative masses

So let me get this straight...

You played an obscure tune for a mainstream audience, and you're surprised that nobody appreciated it?

Oh to be 16 and know everything again...

The first judge plays bass, the second plays piano, the thirds father is a multi million dollar doctor who built 4 or 5 music high schools in my area, and the fourth is majoring in music. Plus, they all have been in every musical since they were Freshman.

Maybe next year we will play KoRn or something...

Thats the thing, I refuse to become a pop band/scene kid robot. Im the kid who jams to Jaco instead of Flo Rida, Miles Davis instead of 50 Cent.

Continue to play what you love and remain unappreciated. Most artists are until after their death.

I play in an "experimental improv rock" band. 100% of what we play is made up on the spot and very progressive as we've learned to take the lead, fall back, and hand the lead off to someone else in the band. Most musicians love us. Most non-musicians do not. I continue to play regardless, as I love what I do.

The lack of music education in our public schools is coming home to roost in the form of musically clueless audiences. Very sad.

Nice bass solo. We use to *jam* this song at the beginning of our sets. I'd usually start and when the drummer finished setting up he would join then the guitars, keys, horns, etc.

I bet if you had added some cheesy vocals you guys would of won.

I can vouch for the that. Its happening in my school.

I.E, I told a kid a few years ago that Tupac shot and killed John Lennon, because he asked who did it. Only last week he came up to me and laughed...

You played good, but relatively unknown music in front of a bunch of high school kids. What did you expect?

The mainstream pretty much sucks and great music often is not appreciated because it is unfamiliar. Get used to it. I did.

I know, I know. But I, and the band, arent going to change to impress a bunch of high school students who are usually too high to even know whats going on.

Thanks for the solo comment! I worked on different versions for a while, and molded them on stage.

It's not about being high. I know potheads who have very good taste in music.

It's about caring enough about music to appreciate things that challenge perceptions molded by familiarity. Most high school student's just don't care about music that much.

I didn't say you should change to become more popular with the stupid high school student crowd. Don't. I'm just saying, if you're into playing music that's not that mainstream, get used to not being appreciated very much.

I play black metal, doom metal and folk music. I'm long since used to the fact that most people aren't going to dig what my bands play. That's all right, because I like what I play.

I guess delayed reaction is better than no reaction.
