Music Genres defined for Older Bass Players

Disclaimer: I'm older, get used to it

Neo-Soul: It's current R&B/ Soul your kids listen to. Don't bother learning any of these songs as you'll never get in a band playing them unless you are strictly a studio musician.

Classic Rock: It's those songs you played when they were new.

Metal: Loud, riff based music that is soothing to the youth, but just repetitive, 1 to 3 chord noise to the old.

Melodic Metal: same as above except you can occasionally pick out melodies.

Screamo: Metal with The Exorcist vocals. Do not attempt as it may be hazardous to your health.

Shoegaze: Ethereal alternative rock, heavy on musical layers and little to no body movement . For those over 40 it has been known to precipitate drooling on ones shoes and/or sleep.

Punk: 80's/90's version of the stuff you played in garage bands early in your career

Dub Step: Electronic dance music. Don't bother learning any songs in this genre, it's all keyboards.

Alternative rock: Code word for "under 40 rock and roll"

Cover Band: Code word for "we're older, we're good and still know how to rock"

Tribute Band: Code word for "we're older, we're good and we know this pays"

Up and coming band in need of bass player: Simply means 1 or 2 weekend warriors that can play a few Zep and Skynyrd tunes wants to put together a hobby band and you gotta chip in to pay for rehearsal studio time. In other words, you have to pay money to teach them more songs.

"Classic rock" seems to include Nirvana, Metallica and U2 these days, but I'm not sure about anything more recent than that. Are Creed or Linkin Park classic rock yet, or do we need to wait a few more years?

By radio standards a song has to be at least ten years old. So yeah, early Creed just may be "classic rock". Crazy!

Math Rock - something that requires you to be able to count to numbers higher than 4.

We'll have to wait a few years. 20 years seems enough to make rock classic, so Nevermind and The Black Album definitely qualify, however recent they seem - and I'm 30

Hardcore: same as metal except the bands' shirts and jeans are two sizes smaller

Those made me chuckle, and I'm a metalhead myself, though I tend to gravitate towards the melodic stuff like Maiden, Queensr˙che, and early Metallica.

Pop Punk - The poser metal from the 80s, except with lamer vocals

Grindcore - The Cookie Monster if he got hold of a pile driver.

Industrial - The sound of the copy machine printing a 400 page document at your office job.

Djent - Slayer with even more guitar wanking.

Stoner - If you played a Slayer 45 on 33

Visual Kei - Boy George playing Metal

Wizard Rock - The Dungeons and Dragons geeks start a band

Third Wave Ska - Playing Bob Marley on 78

Lo-Fi - Imagine if we recorded the sounds from when we tripped at band camp.

Psychobilly - A louder and faster version of the music your old man listened to.

Drum and Bass - It's really not what you would imagine with a name like that.

Indeed... the fact that anything which came out in the 1990-1993 realm is now considered 'classic rock' makes me feel old... and I'm only 31. I heard Pearl Jam on a 'classic rock' station a while back. Made me do a big double-take. To me, 'classic rock' is what most people consider 'classic rock'... 60's/70's bands, some 80's depending. Sheesh...

Dancehall: reggae that kept evolving until it sounded like any other dance pop

Reggaeton: like dancehall, but in Spanish

Trancecore: early 90s Italian dance music with some guitars and screaming occasionally thrown in for some reason

New country: 60s rock with a cleaner sound and shorter guitar solos

Brazilian country: something European soccer players have been dancing to after scoring goals for the past few months, if it keeps spreading you might have to learn to play it

Not really crazy, wasn't late 70s Deep Purple or Led Zeppelin already classic rock in the late 80s?
