Music or women... tonight I feel like a douche

Just had to share my feelings...

I was supposed to go see Yonder Mountain String Band at the Filmore in SF tonight with the front man from my band. Although I'm not obsessed with bluegrass, Yonder is an amazing live act, and I grew up in Colorado so they are a close band to my heart. I've seen them a few times and they are amazing

Well, frontman is about to be sick, and he's singing 6 nights in a row on tour next week, so he bailed with my total support and encouragement that he get some rest so we can kill it in So-Cal next week. I was about to go by myself, but a girl I really like called me and asked what I was doing. I told her about the show and tried to get her to come, but she said she's not too into bands and would rather go dance to a DJ, which I'm cool with on another night, but hey, this is one of my favorite live acts.

Rather than going by myself to Yonder, I said, yeah, sure, I'll meet you at 10:30 and we'll do what you want to do. I wasn't about to buy a $40 ticket for some chick to pretend she likes bluegrass for me... I really tried to convince her it would be fun, and it's a dance band afterall, but she just wasn't into it. She wants to hear house music.

Anyway, I'm dressed up, smelling and looking nice, ready to go meet up with this amazing and hot girl... but knowing she's never going to get the "band thing", I can't help but feel pissed that I didn't just say no and go to the show by myself. I realize now, waiting for the time to meet up with her, that its never gonna work out if she can't appreciate a whole world of music, and I'd be much happier dancing with a stranger at the Yonder show.

As a person, she's good for me. As a musician... not so much.

*sigh*. c'est la vie

Oh I revel in your wide world of things to choose from. My wife just says no, so I don't go.

yeah when I was first married my wife took me to Rush, while we were there she told me, I'm not going to any more concerts with you. She wasn't kidding. She's very into cooking, so at daycare our 4 year old was in music class, he seems to really dig music, but not the class anymore, so they have a cooking class and she switched him. She thinks music is a waste of time. wow

Good point. When my wife and I were first dating (2005) we shared (or rather, I shared) some of my music with her and I actually caught her listening to it a few times.

We went to see The Mars Volta at the Santa Barbara bowl (2006). The crowd was lame, the sound was off, and the entire group of people that I went with weren't into it. My wife and I strayed in musical tastes after that. (oh the wonders of Denver Top-40 radio )

Nothing came close to seeing them at the Greek Theater in LA with my three best friends.

But yeah, all of my music is terrible and I'm an aaaa---jerk for not knowing what music she likes. I do love my wife though.

Girls are everywhere. You see them everyday. A good live show is less common. I'd pick the show and phone the girl up some other time to pick up where you left off.

If she disses you, then you're better off. Who knows, you may have pulled something far better at the show. Every show I went to alone, I never left alone

Given the OP's predicament, I don't need to see a pic to believe a woman is involved

I remember trying to play All My Loving with the school band. The 20+ xylophones and recorders kept slowing down, with the drummer and me soldiering on. We almost failed music that year īcause of that.
Back on topic, itīs obviously too late to go to the concert, but maybe next time (assuming ther is one) you could get here to go. Having said that, I donīt know her, so what I say is worthless to you .
And Iīd NEVER take my current GF to a Cannibal Corpse concert.

I'd have said, "sorry, got the aprents round for dinner tonight. Next Friday, maybe?" Then gone to Yonder.

Slightly off topic, but is introducing unitiated girls/women into music a good move?

If someone listens to house music, that's usually where I get off the bus and wish them luck.

REAL house music is awesome. The stuff on jersey shore is usually top 40s pop and rap remixed for clubs. Some of its good, most of it isn't

I've been with my girlfriend for four years now, met her more like 6 years ago. It was at a gig of mine when I was about 14. She wasn't really a music fan, but being with me means there is music playing a LOT of the time. We often play a game where I ask "who's playing here?" and she guesses... "Okay is the drummer... Dizzy Gillespie?" Haha it's cute, but I love her for being interested. We go to a few jazz gigs a week, plus blues ones and she digs Cream, The Doors and what not. When we met it was My Chemical Romance for her... So it's an improvement to say the least In short, introduce her to everything you love. She digs it? Bonus! But it's no way of judging a girls character. Doesn't dig it? Still no way of judging her character

Maybe a slightly different perspective, but men and women with utterly different hobbies and tastes can have perfectly good relationships, marriages etc. Probably about 25% of my musical taste overlaps with 25% of my wife's. She likes Taio Cruz and I like Yes. She loves dollhouses and crafts and things. I nod and say "OK, that's nice dear." This is why men have man caves and Thursday night out with the guys and wise women don't object (they may fuss a little) because their man needs to go be a man with the men sometimes.

So I wouldn't have a problem with her being into House instead of Bluegrass. If you like HER more than you like Bluegrass, I'd say you made the right call. If this was just a booty call from one random girl out of a crowd, on the other hand, maybe not.
