Is "Mustang Sally" a real song, or a TB joke?

Sign in to disble this ad
I've seen this song mentioned many times on TB as the most popular cover song ever, and yet I've never played it, never heard it, never heard it mentioned outside of TB. I do know "Brown-Eyed Girl" is real, but "Mustang Sally"?

So I'm starting to wonder... is this song actually more popular than anything by Madonna or Michael Jackson or Lady Gaga or anyone else, or is it just a random not-so-popular song (or completely nonexistent song) that's become a TB running joke like carrots?

Heh, I'm at work so I can't listen to it, but a quick Youtube search shows only vids with less than a million views, so it would seem it's a real song but relatively obscure. I still have this suspicion that no one actually plays it, and talking about playing it is just some joke that originated in a thread ten years ago...

Ha ha ha yes it's totally real and probably a necessity for a cover band to at least have in their back pocket to play. Wilson Pickett hit from the 1960s.

Brought back to life 1991 - in part - by the appearance in the Alan Parker movie "The Commitments".

Ha. I blame growing up in a socialist country that did a pretty effective job of controlling what foreign music we could hear.

Wikipedia says:

"Rice's version made it to #15 on the U.S. R&B charts in 1965. Pickett's version climbed to #6 R&B and #23 Pop in 1966."

The way it's talked about on TB, I'd have expected it to have been #1 for at least a couple months! But I guess it's really popular among the audiences that a large chunk of TBers play to.

I've never heard it, nor had I heard of it before joining talkbass. Not going to listen to it, because it's way more amusing to not know anything about it. Makes it really funny when everyone complains about having to play/being sick of playing some song I'd never even heard of.

As much as a joke that song has become , I get more satisfaction out of playing it and makeing it kick ass.
Buddy Guy did it and it kills.
It just goes to show , if you're good you can make anything kick ass.

Tell us your Mustang stories then....

Best Mustang I ever played was 15 years ago with a visiting Texan pro drummer who sat in at our humble jam night. So many ways to mess with those riffs and still be the same song. He grabbed onto what the guitarist was doing and it was layed out for me, groovalicious. So I still have a soft spot for old Sally.

It's one of those types of songs if you do it right, can be a hell of a lot of fun to play.

Try playing a mini-medley of "Keep Your Hands to Yourself" and "Johnny B. Goode" sometime.
You will feel like a dirty sellout, and the drunks will go absolutely beserk.
Seems like most people most want to hear songs they've heard at least ten thousand times before.
