I have my Grandfather's Kay upright. I don't play it much, but when I do I'm always aware of the Legacy factor.

My Dad played the same bass for years......... Both of those gentlemen are gone now. I miss 'em.

I always find it interesting to find out who, of the musicians I know, come from musical families. I myself do not. I by no means regret coming from the family I do. My father is a great man and he's contributed to many important aspects of my personality, even if music wasn't one of them. Still, I do get jealous of people who not only inherit sweet gear, but have a good story to go along with it. I could go out and buy an awesome vintage bass (and in fact I'm very proud of my 82 squier, from the year of my birth), but it's not quite as cool as getting it from somebody you love, and having strong associations based on that.

Thank You for the wonderful story, I really enjoyed that, it makes me wish that one of my children had wanted to play bass.

A lot of people don't like it when I play the single coil P that belonged to my grandfather, something about it not quite sounding like me, but they just don't see the value of playing an instrument that's been in the hands of a man that not only is my grandfather, but a man that used it to play in Nashville in the 60's. There's a lot of history in an instrument like that, and I'm immensely glad my grandfather is still alive to see it continue to be gigged even to this day.

Makes me sad that I'm a lefty and my father's a righty. He has an absolutely beautiful les paul jr. (obviously, he's a guitarist) that he loves, and I've spent years revering that gorgeous guitar... he doesn't play much anymore and he and I both know I HATE restringing righties hendrix style so he'll probably end up selling the thing. However, he bought me my Carvin AND my Hartke back about 12 years ago when I was playing jazz/funk bass in HS, so I guess that's something.

I have an acoustic guitar that my grandfather made way back in '75. He built around 100ish acoustic guitars, apparently. Still alive, but can't make or play guitars anymore. I treat the guitar like my kid.

I have a 79 Gibson SG that I plan passing to my daughter. But the Jazz will have to go my son...

Same story here. My father`s a bassist and all the gear I own (One usual Jazz, one fretless, acoustic guitar and some other small things) belongs to him. And now my sister is all upset because he sold his Strat back in 80s.
Well, if it wasn`t for him I would have never started playing, so kudos to him and all the music parents out there
