my first gig @_@!!!

Sign in to disble this ad
so uh... yea... this friday is my first "gig"

i wouldnt be so nervous if i wasnt playing something i just heard for the first time yesturday.. heh

the highschool i graduated from a couple years ago, they have this yearly competition between all teh grades called "sing" and each grade has there own staff of writers and directors and performers, well, the juniors won this year and they are going on to the city tournament (well just the boroug of queens) and they have a new play written out and the guy who wrote it is into 70s era music, and im not too certain what the play is about, but it revolves around led zeppelin and the beatles, anyway... my role in this is this... i play john paul jones, and we are playing communication breakdown.

so its a 2 and a half minute song i have to learn by this friday night, i pretty much have it down, just gata work on teh first breakdown bit, its rhythm and what not..

anyway... so not only is my first gig a song iv never heard before the other day, but its a part of a play thats part of a competition, and this is also teh first time im playing infront of my peers, so this is my time to show them that im a decent enough bass player to be in a band cuz im kinda looked down on when it comes to skills..

so wish me luck

the show will be recorded so expect a video up later

hey, good luck man!!! just remember to go over the 'how to deal with first gig thread'. It'll be loads of fun. Yes, you'll be nervous, but you'll get over it.

Wow... no pressure first time out of the gate huh? Don't worry about it man. Be cocky and seize the role. Then, go start up a Zeppelin trib band!

Seriously, one song? You can do that.

heh, well today was the dress rehersal of the play, and the first time i met/played witht he rest of the band, pretty cool guys, the guitar play said he was goign to improv the solo, so i figured id improve a little myself in the breakdown parts, so that takes some pressure off learning those bits.. lol

but when our scene came up and before the curtains opened (to like the 20ish people that were there) i was shitting bricks.. lol butterflys were on steroids in my stomache and wanted out...

but we kept having difficulties with the singer, and the mic, and then the singer couldnt sing that high so we were looking for somebody to fill in... we didnt even get throug the song once lol

but some of what the play is about...

its about music in general and how it shapped society and what not... well i think this is what its about lol i didnt catch it all... any way, my scene is this:

they are having auditions or something for hard rock bands, and the guitar player is upfront infront of the curtain, and he starts off with stairway to heaven, and then gets interupted and is all "THATS NOT HARD ROCK!" then he's all "you wanna hear hard rock?!" and the curtains open and we break into communication breakdown

Just my two cents, but you should learn those parts note for note. Make it a challenge to yourself.

i can play those parts if im looking at the sheet music, but i cant put the first two breakdowns to memory yet, i have teh third one down thoug... the improv thing will most likely be a last resort

OH SNAP!!

they added another song...

there was supposed to be a finally, and that was just supposed to be the gutiar player and drummer doing oen of their original pieces, but the director thought it would be cool if there was something heavier with the entire band.. so we decided on ac/dc - back in black...

so i have to learn another song by friday evening..

i just went over it and its not hard, but my/our practice time is very limited...

this is where it is useful to have a bit of theory knowledge to be able to stay in key if i lose my place heh.

guess i should have learned that too

HOLY CRAP!!!

i said it in the "first gig tips" and im going to say it again...

DONT USE ANYTHING UNLESS YOUVE HAD ATLEAST A DAY HOME TO PLAY WITH IT!!!

my guitar player borrowed his friend's wireless system an hour before the show, we got there... it worked back stage and we got onstage and BOOM... no sound... and he opened the scene (this was in a school play, not a bar or anything) and he was supposed to come in first and no sound at all... took us two minutes to give up trying to make it work and go directly to the amp...

people started to laugh and giggle... but then they cheared there arses off when they heard the intro to stairway to heaven then when we broke into communication breakdown

his intro bit was pretty much flawless but the actual song was iffy. and the mic was going in and out... and the singers voice was HORRIBLE!!!

we came back for the finale to play back in black while the cast ran onto the stage for a last hoorah.. the moment they heard the DARARA, they started to cheer... wich is a good feeling and takes a load off

so it wasnt a horrible night... just wish it went better...

took a video of it, so i'll upload it as soon as i get ituploaded...

Hmmm....

Faulty equipment and a singer that can't carry a tune in a bucket? Sounds like a lot of HS productions I've seen....

Seriously though, you seem to be taking it all in stride and doing quite well! Keep having fun with it!

yeah, its like a law of nature that something or some one will screw up in a first gig (in my case it was me). It's all good though. Just look forward to the next one.
