my first year of bass and 1st real audition coming up

Wow! Happy new year to all. It's been a crazy year and wanted to recount and dispel some nerves for an audtition coming me.

I was a guitarist in another lifetime and musically retired until a friend convinced me to join his punk rock cover band on bass. I got a mexi-jazz and an ashdown combo and started gigging this year in march. Played out a few times and then also got involved with a local "school of rock" workshop in october doing sixties tunes under the tutelage of the guy who was in the TUBES.
We played out twice under this lineup.

So it's been a full year of being a gigging bass player, to celebrate this christmas, I upgraded to a Stingray (!).

And oddly just in time to see this ad on craigslist for a bass player.

Emailed the guy and got the mp3's and was stunned at how great the tunes were and how up my alley they were (arty, pop music with a psychedelic touch). And they have an entire CD all recorded to boot!

So next week I'm auditioning, wow, this is my first "real" audition (I did'nt have to for the 2 other bands). The stingray is coming in real handy and nails the tone on their CD.

So the bass has been real good to me this year (and I've spend some $$ on it as well). who knows how this will end up.

Wish me luck.

Congratulations on your success so far and best of luck on the audition. As someone who is still working up the nerve (and ability) to play out, I salute you for what you have done this past year.

Happy New Year.

Thanks! Much appreciated. I haven't been this excited about an audition in years. And before it would have been as a guitarist.

So it's a little weird. We'll see how this goes.

Is a stingray considered cheap? It's not when you think I got the MIM jazz for $240 used. Or does "$" denote 1 thousand? Then yes I'm off by a factor of 1

I have auditioned a few times since I started playing again one year ago.

Just relax, keep it simple and learn the songs.

It's 50% attitude, 50% talent.

Also try to show up with good gear. If they say "we have an amp for you" bring your gear anyway even if it remains in the car or truck. Believe me, I auditioned for a metal band and all they had was a crappy Crate 50W combo.

If you have a pedal tuner, bring it, to keep in tune, which really really is important.

Thanks for the tip! Didn't you post about your first upcoming gig here? Good luck on that.

I think I'm okay in the bass department a little lacking in the amp department but thank god it's not too big. And I am on the upgrade path.

Don't have a pedal tuner but the stingray stays in tune pretty well, very in the pocket playing for these guys nothing too wild.

Will see how this goes, I've been around enough to know anything can happen between now and then but I'll keep my fingers crossed for at least the audition to go through.

Hey, just met with the guys last night. From my perspective it seems like it went as well as it could possibly go. The guys seem pretty cool, one guitarist is my age (mid-late 40's) and seemed to been in the same musical circles I was in in the 90's. He actually seems to think we met before at a mutual drummer friend's house. I of course don't recall this at all.

They were impressed that I had learned pretty well 7 of their 13 songs from their CD, we did those songs, did a free form jam and even tried a couple of new songs they were working on. Then we sat on the couch and talked musical influences, the drummer's younger and into bands like RHCP, Tool, Perfect circle (bands I don't really know about). The other guitarist seems like a big radiohead fan.

I like the songs, the guys seem cool and they did use small amps, I had to use a 15" peavy combo they had, it was okay but a little muddy and had to crank the highs on the stingray a little.

Anyways, went well, they did say they had to try somebody else out. So there, I actually left the studio feeling pretty f-ing good!

But of course any thing can happen, but as auditions go this one rocked!

Thanks TB for all the tips and encouragements!

I am seeing a theme emerge about these try-out stories...tuning. Do people honestly show up for try-outs and not tune up FIRST?
