So my girlfriend just got home from Europe tour with her school. See show me a pic of a John Entwistle signed Bass while she was in Hard Rock Cafe Venice (She took the photo because she knows I love The Who) Then she told me how her friend met another great bassist, John Deacon whilst in Paris. So I just said that Entwistle was much better than Deacon, she replied 'Well of course, John Deacon's just a bass player' Apparently she thought the bass in Venice was a guitar and that John Entwistle is Pete Townshend -__-
I know it sounds stupid my English is not very good haha |

I know it sounds stupid my English is not very good haha | I find it odd that your response to your girlfriend's story was, "Entwistle was much better than Deacon". |

| | | | Big fan of Entwistle, but I wouldn't throw Deacon down like that. He's an equally incredible Bassist in my opinion. He also wrote a bunch of Queens hit songs.. I mean, he wrote 'Another one bites the dust'. That's such an iconic song and with a powerful and memorable bass line. I guess when I see stuff like that, I realize how underrated Deacon is. Though really, he had a huge influence on modern music that just can't be denied. |

Deacon- supported the group with solid groove. tasty and appropriate.
Entwistle- carried the groups to the heights they reached by basically playing "lead" bass. No way your average groove player would deal well with Moon or Townshend. In fact, years ago, Entwistle said in an article he liked playing with Kenny Jones better because he didn't have to keep time for the band like he did with Moon.
To me, apples and oranges. IMHO

To me, apples and oranges. IMHO | Although, to quote a section of Deacon's wikipedia page, the same is said about him. Quote: |
Originally Posted by Wikipedia Deacon's style was one that was rarely seen in rock bands during the 1970s. Rather than just serving a background role and playing root notes, he used the bass as a lead and rhythm instrument. Some of his basslines are very intricate and difficult to play, such as "The Millionaire Waltz", "I'm Going Slightly Mad" and "You're My Best Friend", granting his technique an affinity with Motown's lead style basslines. Some of Queen's songs, such as "Dragon Attack", "Another One Bites the Dust", "Body Language", and "A Kind of Magic", feature the bass as the main instrument. When performing with Queen, Deacon delivered a highly technical style, with numerous runs, walking basslines and tight quick note changes. Deacon mainly used his fingers, though sometimes he did use a pick. Two of his trademarks are licking his fingers when playing and sticking two picks under the pick guard. He generally did not play with a floating thumb and occasionally played with his thumb itself. His basslines are notable on "Crazy Little Thing Called Love", "Liar", "Brighton Rock", "Under Pressure", "'39", "You're My Best Friend", "I Want to Break Free", and "One Year of Love", to name a few.
Another trademark of Deacon's playing are his bass runs. In a 1975 review of Sheer Heart Attack, the reviewer wrote: "Only at the end would a new initiate to Queen recognise John Deacon's unmistakable trademark: the bass runs under the fade are a fast and facile as any to be heard. The least well known musician in Queen is one of his rock generation's most able." | |
