a friend of ours is a senior in high school and wanted me to play some upbeat song from the show glee for their talent show. fine. thats cool. listening to the song, it really doesnt have a bass part. i mentioned that i could make somthing up, and she said that would be fine since its more a guitar/piano/drum oriented song anyway. my girlfriend yells out,
"its too bad he doesnt have enough brain capacity to play guitar!"
i defend myself saying that bass isnt easy, and its a lot different than guitar. she went on to explain alot of people who cant learn guitar go to bass. maybe, but i basically (no pun intended) told her that bass players are not failed guitarists.
cmon tb, back me up here.
ps- i love her just the same but her comment bothered me. |

Playing guitar does not mean that you have increased brain capacity in the least. I have heard plenty of shredosaurus guitards who just go on the pentatonic with no regard for key signature.
Of course, if you want to really hammer her on the brain capacity bit, challenge her to play a better bass part than you on your friend's song.
You win!

That's sure to go over well.

Without bass...there is no foundation...harmonically, rhythmically. Man, to have your own girlfriend nail you with that is just #%$&ed!!!!!

You win! | +1 on this, shoot +1000. It's easy to hit a piano key, pluck the strings on the bass or even play an a7 chord on the geetar for that matter, but it's not easy to be good. I had someone pull that card on me too. Oh, the shame!

I think Bass is easier for sure at the rudimentary level - but to be accomplished and play it well - I think we are on even footing there. I mean a simple song with root notes is easy to pull off. Soloing effectively over changes and still holding the groove is more than that for sure. And playing G C and D can be seen as easy on Guitar - how many songs does that give you?
Show her some Youtubes of your favorite Bass Players tearing it up and ask her the question again regarding brain capacity etc.... My 2 cents

If I'd been in the room, you'd have been ready to fight me because I'd have told her what she needed to do with her mouth instead of using it to speak out of place. But you need backup to be rid of her? Wow. |
