i break bass strings all the time, i dont see how you can get them to last 5 years and i dont play slap very often. maybe i just have cheap strings. longest i've had a set of strings was 6 months.

Are you tuning to standard pitch? If you're going too tight, they will be much more prone to breakage. It it's not that, the only thing else I imagine it could be is that your bass has a bad setup and needs to be adjusted. Or your cat is chewing your strings when you're away. Or some sort of caustic chemical is getting on the strings.

When I was playing regularly and practicing in between, I don't think I really would have left a set on for more than six months either, i used to think that fret wear marks were the cause of quiet spots and buzzing due to inbalance in the full length of the string. ( couldn't have been my heavy handed playing ) but still I never had one break. I can only imagine that it would break at the bridge or the tuning post.

Every time he breaks a string, smile at him and kiss your bass strings.

I tell you my main guitarist goes through 10 strings before I ever consider changing mine.

Bit of topic, but today my guitarist actually admitted bass was hard! I made him repeat it 2 times, just to make sure i was hearing right. Made it a great day!

Yeah guitarists have to restring like every other week just to stay normal. I can last a set for a year at least. Unless I am touring, in which case something about bouncing in vans and hot humid clubs prematurely ages my strings, but does wonders for me!
I think guitarists are obsessed with that zingy new string sound. They claim that they have to change every week or they wont tune, but my strat with locking tuners has had the same set for 4 months now. No prob.

You need a G string for a good garrote...

Let's see....
Around €7,50 for a set of guitar strings. Changed at least every other week is €15,00 a month.
A set of Elixers for my 5stringer €57,00
uptime: almost 8 months and counting.
weekprice: €7,12 (and nowhere near needing replacement)

anyone who doesn't has a bass driven band needs to just accept that the giutarist will have a bigger ego than the rest of the band members. I never have a prob with my guitarist, cuz i'm the band, bass and vocals. u guys should all try that stuff, u'll never get in another argument, even if bass strings cost more than giutar strings
