Was he talking about chewing gum while trying to sing or his wardrobe choice?

Actually I though he was a little premature....

two comments:

1. that was a bad idea and your singer was right.

2. never let your guitar player speak to the crowd again.

Been there. Tried it out, failed, move on and forget you ever learned it let alone played it.
I do have to ask: When will the trend of reworking a crappy/sappy 80s song die?

Edit - He says "gum was a bad idea."
Either way, I agree.

IMHO band should NEVER comment on their own playing or choices regards to tracks to the audience. playing a song and saying "that was a bad idea" over the mic for everyone to hear is bad. There could be some people out there who actually liked it - or just sorta liked it, or at least didn't run away screaming.
If you start to put your own work down towards the people who pay you - you automatically become less worth. Discussions like this should STAY at the practice space. look at it this way - IMO the singer just insulted everyone who clapped - taking away their judging skills.

if a track doesn't work for the crowd - move on quickly and discuss on the way home or next practise. don't do it on the air.

+1 Another thing I can't stand is apologizing for the song before you even start: "We haven't practiced this much but..."

I mostly agree with crusie, but I've gotta admit..I LOVE some Me First and the Gimmie Gimmies!! We(my band) simply refuse to play BrownEyedGirl, but if we get harassed enough,we'll break it out Me First style..and WE have fun playing it,and more fun looking at the confused "what just happened" expressions on the harassers. We also cover NothingCompares2U and NaturalWoman by them..LOTS of fun,but definitely last set stuff..usually

I actually think it was a good idea (the remake in a different style). That band needs to learn how to sell it better, though. A little dynamics wouldn't hurt, either.

No reaction? That's about what we get at the end of each song!!

No matter how much the crowd is singing and dancing during the song, it's like they think they are listening to a DJ or radio and just don't acknowledge the band. I can have people trying to High-5 me during a song, fists pumping all that kinda stuff and zip, zero, zilch!

The next week we could have the crowd going nuts after every song - no matter what POS it it!!

I've been to check out some other local cover bands and they get the same deal.

Kids these days!

I think that's partly because he seems to have trouble staying on pitch.

Your singer made me think of the singer from the wedding band in the movie Hangover.

I hate to say it, but if I was at the door pulling money out of my pocket for the cover charge and heard that, I'd put my money away and go elsewhere.
