My New Gig

Ok, so I guess I'm finally a "pro" musician now! (well not really)

You see, I have a friend, who plays the steel drum. He's a really cool guy but has issues with his mother & stepfather, along with his stubbornness, that have rendered him homeless. Every now and again his uncle will book him to play at peoples parties. He plays his steel drum to the rhythm machine on a keyboard. Well Friday night he called me up asking me for some help. He had 2 gigs to do on saturday, one in our hometown and another in LA. He asked if Id give him a ride, and if Id press the key changes on his keyboard. He told me he'd give me $150 so I said sure! After playing the first gig we were approached by a dude who is opening up a medicinal marijuana dispensary and wants to have him play to attract some business, and Im coming along, making another $150 for a 2 hour gig! All I do is change keys! Such a sweet gig!

Haha, it was implied we'd definitely get to check out the new product.

Stand around... Jam to steel drum music... Free illicit substances. Sounds too good to be true... but I offer you my humblest congatulations.

This is why my steel drum playing friend apologized to me as a musician. But you know what, despite the fact that I didnt do much aside from switch the keys up, and dance, and watch in amazement of some awesome steel drumming, and making the easiest $150 Ive ever made... wait... where was I going with this? Good times!

Just what the 'doctor' ordered. So to speak.

Just contacted the "doctor". We're playing from Noon to 3pm, and making $400, split 50/50, along with some "extra perks".

I figured I'd leave this here... so, it all amounted to a weird little gig.

We arrive an hour early. Not quite the best part of town. Theres some gangster looking guys hanging out in front of the tattoo shop next door. When we approach one of them comes up to us. We tell him we're the band playing for the shop and instantly everyone became super accomodating. We sit in the waiting room while they bring us some drinks, along with some "medication".

We ended up playing, not in front of the shop as one might expect, but around the corner, facing the main street. We go on at 12 sharp and just jam it up. We thought it strange that they didnt want us to promote the shop or anything, so we're pretty much playing to passers by, and getting a lot of looky-lous from the traffic. No one from the shop was around, except the 3 or 4 times someone stopped by for a few seconds.

AT one point we started thinking "this gig is a little too easy" and started doubting the legitimacy of it, so on our set break the steel drummer goes to have a chat. He comes back and says everythings cool.

We walked away from that one $200 large with call back coming up in the next few weeks.
