Every Thursday at lunch we come in and play, talk, and compare guitars. I'm going to start bringing my fretless Jazz just to show some of those guitards what a real man plays!

Sorry man, you're just too young to be jaded. Don't listen to a lot of these guys that just have the angry "martyr complex". Play bass because you love bass and want to be good at it; not to show "those guitards" anything.
Believe me, your attitude will determine whether you're an angry "misunderstood" musician working at a gas station, playing with frustrating bands that are on the "cusp of their big break" or actually making a decent living playing your instrument (that you love) in different situations.
The secret to making money playing is understanding that you have to "cobble a living" by doing things like giving lessons, doing sit in gigs, studio work on the side even if you are in a steady band. That being said, at some point nobody wants to be around attitude and the phones will stop ringing. Nobody's THAT good where they can't be replace at some point.
Take this as advice from a guy that wishes somebody had told it to me when I started in the biz going on 30 years ago. It would've saved me a lot of pain, agony, frustration, etc. and I'd probably be further along now than I am. |

One thing's for sure, at least in my part of the country, an AVERAGE bass player without an attitude who just enjoys playing and works at it will NEVER, repeat, NEVER be lacking for work!!!!

BTW: I play both guitar and bass professionally. I have the utmost respect for my rhythm section and understand that they're the guys that make me look good up there frontin' the band! The guitarist's that matter usually understand this as well.
