So, a couple months ago I picked up a 2006 MIM P from some 12 yr old for $80. Neck had a crazy bow, stickers covering up big chips of paint, and the bridge was pitted, and it buzzed like all hell. But hey, for $80... I've since based the neck back, "relic'd" the chips to look like wear, swapped the bridge with a babicz full contact, swapped in a SD quarter pounder, redid the wiring with new pots, and slapped on some chromes.

On wednesday, I played in the semis of a pretty large battle of the bands. After our set an older gentleman came up and said, "Son, I know it's a P but what is it? What year? I mean man, your tone was just killer. I've got a 62, 66, 68, 72, and a 77 and your tone just blew me away."

We moved on to the finals, got many compliments on our band's sound, on my playing... But the only one I cared about was his.

Good for you. It's always heartening when others compliment your "baby," especially when you put a lot of time and effort (and cash) into it. Obviously you got it right.
Congrats on the performance as well.

Well done - can you post some pics? I've done this once or twice myself and it does feel good to rescue something that was abused and unloved and give it a new life. Strangely though after a while I wasn't inclined to hang on to the couple that I've done and traded them in in pursuit of that elusive 'special' bass. Do you think yours is a keeper or a trader?

I've had a number of compliments on my playing, and my bands, but never really for my tone. It is something i'd like to accomplish.

I have built an acoustic guitar (which has gotten compliments for it's sound) and am thinking of building my own bass with a local bass builder who is very talented. But I feel like I need more experience with pickups and gear to know exactly what I want yet.

Nice work making yours into a player! Fixing up an old/damaged bass would be a lot of fun, actually...
