It's a few days late, but for whatever reason I didn't think of posting this until now.
Anyway, our singer/guitarist got there at 7:45-ish, and we were scheduled to play (apparently) at 8:20, although I thought it was earlier than that. The other guitarist and I showed up a little before eight, to the annoyance of the first guitarist. We set everything up, and a few minutes later, our drummer arrived. We did a hasty sound check, and started playing.
Throughout the whole set, I could sense that something was wrong with the first guitarist. He seemed to be even more spacey than usual, and stopped singing halfway through one song. There was an awkward pause after that song as we tried to figure out what to play next. (He didn't want to play what we were supposed to play) So he starts without the rest of us on a song we hadn't rehearsed in ages, but it was a nice easy funky one with plenty of room for jamming. It went relatively well until he started droning chords. (think sleeping Pete Townshend on painkillers) Eventually his guitar stopped altogether, and it turned out that he had turned off his amp, packed up his guitar, and was on his way out the door.
Apparently he got "bad vibes"...
I haven't talked to him since, but from what the other guitarist says, it's because "I showed up late and criticized him", and supposedly the drummer was supposedly drunk, which is possible, since he was off-time most of the night and stepped on us a few times.
This was kind of a fishy gig to begin with, as we're a Phish-esque high school band opening for a few middle-age blues bands playing for a New Years party that didn't even start until we were finished.
But to leave entirely? That's a bit over the top, even for him...
A cookie (or carrot if you would prefer) for everyone who actually read this whole thing. |
