ok i was the bassist in a band called damn these metal arms and i was invited to try out at one of their practices as there temp bass player. after the 1st practice they said i was perfect for the job and i really liked the members. ok so chris (the bands guitarist) described his role in the band as "dad" because if it wasn't me going for walks in rough areas/ nearly getting ran over it was our singer dating strange girls or our drummer getting drunk every gig.
the band split due to things out of our control (a girl... not mine) and chris moved back to england.
few days ago i got a txt from chris reading "move to sunderland i need your bass skills"
i replied with "dont you have a bass wizard"
and i got the reply "yeah but hes not near you in skill or energy or humour"
and hearing that just made me verry happy
chris used to describe me as the most unique player out there and i always thought he was joking
the fact that he said he has tried playing with 6 different bands up there and he keeps saying none of the bass players come close just makes me think

I was subbing for a friend in his country band (played with them many times before) and they had a sub on drums. Last time, it was a horror show, the guy couldn't keep the tempo, and drank too much. Last night a different guy. Kind of dorky looking 50-something. But he had some serious chops ... one of the best drummers I've ever played with. We locked on and rocked the place all night long, communicating with eyes, body language and sometimes shouting over the stage noise. At the end of the night he stuck out his hand and said, "You are a great bass player ... and you made my job much easier tonight". I was about to tell him the exact same thing ...

I was momentarily speechless, then shook his hand and told him, "that's the nicest thing a bluesman has ever said to me..." We both laughed, and gave each other a hug. There's nothing like playing with the real deal to sharpen your skills!

I'll spare the minutiae, but the whole band was white, and we were doing some funk-blues improv, and were told by a pair of black fellas that we sounded like the real deal. This was over 20 years ago, in LA (pre-rodney King).

Neal Schon (the guitarist for Journey) walked into the club after their concert nearby and asked our soundman about us, then said that "the guitar player is really good". Right in front of the mics I was recording the show with!!!
So for years I could whip the tape out and listen to an expert pass judgement on my skills, which would really help whenever I doubted or was feeling down.
Thanks, Neal!

Ran through some Sabbath riffs, a bit of Zeppelin, some Harris style gallops, all just to get nice and loose before we got going.
I start playing the slow part of Metallica's "Orion", when a guy (about 20-25) runs about 30m from the back of the hall to in front of the stage to proclaim I play just like Cliff. Felt great, and put me in the best possible state of mind for my first ever gig.
Then the mic stops working, the drumkit falls apart and the rhythm guitarist forgets part of the final song...
