Off to gig with the young kiddleywinks again

Lots of fun to be had. The combined ages of the guitarist, drummer and keyboard player don't add up to that much more than mine. Last gig I got asked by this girl in the audience if I was the drummer's dad. I didn't know whether to laugh or cry.

Anyway, we've updated the set list a bit and we're ready to go again next Friday. Here's a taste of the stuff we do... a good mix of classic and more recent stuff, I think. And some of these are great fun for a bassist.

Florence And The Machine - You've Got The Love
Amy Winehouse - Valerie
Beyonce - Deja Vu
Stevie Wonder - Signed, Sealed, Delivered, I'm Yours
Stevie Wonder - Superstition
Stevie Wonder - I Wish
Wild Cherry - Play That Funky Music
Alicia Keys - Falling
Moloko - Sing It Back
Earth, Wind and Fire - September
Tweet - Boogie 2Nite
Mary Mary - Shackles
Labelle - Lady Marmalade
Sister Sledge - We Are Family
Chic - Good Times
Chaka Khan - Ain't Nobody
Michael Jackson - The Way You Make Me Feel
Estelle - American Boy
Duffy - Mercy
Justin Timberlake - Rock Your Body
Jackie Wilson - Your Love Keeps Lifting Me Higher
Plan B - She Said
Cee Lo Green - Forget You
Beyonce Knowles - Crazy In Love
Gnarls Barkley - Crazy

Good list. I remember being the kid in a band with the old timers. Now I'm their age. They seemed so old then.

Yeah, as a kid I played with people way older than me, including my Dad. I learned a hell of a lot, too.

But I'm now enjoying gigging with these kids very much. The guitarist and the drummer are both terrific players, even more so when you consider how young they are.

Gigs seem to be picking up over here after a lean spell. I've now got stuff in my diary with four different bands, including some nice corporate work with the big 21 piece band. Things are starting to look like fun again for old bassybill.

That is a nice set, for tunes and for basslines, your influence Bill? ; )

Doing that little solo in the Moloko track on bass? That is fun, great set, it's quality ; )

Incidentally, what key for Ain't Nobody?

The guitarist and drummer generally pick the tunes - but they like the sort of stuff that I really enjoy playing, so I guess that's why they think I fit in well.

Yes, I'll be putting the little break into the Moloko number.

We do "Ain't Nobody" in Eb minor - I think that's the original key.

I posted this in the Recordings forum, but I'll share it here as it's a new add to our set list. This number by Cee Lo Green is just great fun, and you gotta agree with kesslari with what he says about that.

Cool, Ain't nobody I've played in Eb, E and D, I think on the original they may have de-tuned a semi for the vocal range, nice to play in E, my 2 anyways ; )

Actually, I'm about 5 years older than the drummer's dad.

Nice list! I'd love to do a Florence song, how does "You've got the love" go over? Haven't had a band with a singer who could pull it off though... yet...

Oh yeah. That looks like a fun gig. In the best band I've ever played, the singers are currently in their last year of high school, and I graduated high school shortly before they were born.

You've Got the Love is ALWAYS guaranteed to do the job - the punters just love it, wherever we are. Our singer does it really well, bless her, and the rest of us just go nuts with it.
