I'm guessing many people aren't familiar with the origin of this device:

It's an old Far Side cartoon from Gary Larson.

Classic. I definitely remembered the first time I heard about it.

Mics, at the studio when the engineer came at me with DI....no thank you as i play right fingers only ( lots of slap noise ) from my bag, here use these, pair of AKG D222 dual element passives. That was the end of that conversation.

SM57's and 58's are general purpose, hard to imagine been around from the 70's or maybe before. Even used an EV1 from the 60's once...amazing mic.

Cheers...

it's just a volume pot in a box. if your amp has a master volume, it's the same thing!

if your amp has an effects loop but no master volume, then this gadget would indeed become the master volume.

more useful is the electro-harmonix signal-pad, which does the exact same thing but has an on-off stomp switch; that way the guitar player can be loud for his leads, and turned the hell down for rhythm playing.

funniest pedal names are the ones by metasonix
e.g. the scrotum smasher - a valve (sourced from old radio's) distortion pedal.
very alternative sound
