I placed an online ad a few months ago, on a couple different message boards, when my current band seemed to be in a slump and I was looking for another project. Fast forward to a couple weeks ago, and I got a call from a guitarist who said he was putting together a new band in my area (I had never talked with this guy before). I returned his call and he said they were looking for someone who would be dedicated (i.e. only be in their band). I said I couldn't do that since our band just recorded a new demo and seemed to be getting back on track. His band sounded kind of interesting, but then he named all these bands they were thinking of covering that I don't even listen to, and he's like "It seems like stuff you'd be good at". Again, I've never talked with this guy before and the ad I posted was pretty generic. I'm wondering if maybe he saw my ad and got confused with someone else, although he was using my name when he called.
Anyway, we agree that it's probably not a good fit at the moment, and he saves my number. I say "That's fine, maybe we'll get a chance to work in the future, blah blah blah." Fast forward again to this past Saturday (basically two weeks after we spoke on the phone), he calls again and leaves a voice mail saying "Yeah, I think we agreed to get together...I've got the band getting together around 5PM tomorrow, hope you can make it." OK...I don't bother calling him back right away, since we never talked about it. He calls me the following afternoon, and I have to turn him down again.
Just a weird situation...maybe he was just desperate for a bass player or something.

1. Confusion -- the person contacting you doesn't understand/remember what you said. Sometimes talk = yes in some people's eyes.
2. Manipulation -- the person is intentionally trying to act like he didn't get the message in hopes that they can persuade you into joining them.
I'd give them the benefit of the doubt and go with confusion. But if I was looking for a bassist and found an ad that was close but not a perfect match, I'd call just to check it out. Maybe the gig I had is better than going to school for the bassist. Doesn't hurt anyone to talk about it. |

Well he knows I dont like metal and he knows that because of my job and family I cant committ to playing in bars. But he keeps getting a guitarist to try out and asks me to come and just help out till they find a FT bass player. Next thing you know he has two or three people over thinking I ma gonna be THE bass player.
luckily 4 me this guys luck, people skills and orginizational skills are so bad things never work out anyway.
And on a related story to the ALabama thing...
Why does Kentucky Fried chicken play Sweet Home Alabama during their commercials. Especially when you factor in that Skynard is from Florida?????? |

I play in a top 40 cover band in Nashville. Recently, we were looking to ad a female singer. All of us have day jobs, so we only play a few times a month. Because of our location, there are literally hundreds of wanna-be country music stars in this town desperate for a band. When I placed the ad, I specifically stated "No professional singers. No singer-songwriters looking for a backing band. No, we will not play Tootsies for free on Tuesday night. We are not a country band."
In total, I got over 40 responses to my ad. 37 of those were country music starlets. No joke. At least half of those asked "how much country do you play" or "I need a backing band for my upcoming 'release party.'" Several sent me their press packet. Most of them had their own web site.
