So what do I do...in the middle of the song I realize it and begin to fix it. Problem was I kept tightening the A string. So now we're into the 3rd song with my A string super sharp, my D string stupid flat and me playing with this huge grin on my face because it was just so funny to me.
Just curious, NewGuy... you play a Music Man perchance?

I never forget to tune up on my bass but....

Every year the Jazz Ensembles perform a lunch period at my school at the end of the year. My song had an easy Latin bassline that could be played entirely on the A and D strings (using open A). I get up and start playing. I always prefer closed strings when possible so I hit the 5th fret on the E string for my A. This uber flat yucky noise comes out, and I realized the E string was more of a Db than an E. It sucked, I had no time to get an A from the piano and there was no tuner up there. I just wish someone from the previous period warned me.

One of my first gigs (years ago) when I first started playing bass having learn guitar for a few years.

My first few songs were fine, all very simple stuff mostly on the E and A string, then I did my first song with the G and D strings - way out. I had tuned them to B and E (top strings of bass = top strings of guitar). Haven't made that mistake since.

Bump for a good story from Saturday.

I played a private party and part of the agreement was that for a song before our set one of the guests was going to come up and use the keyboardists rig to play a song to the guest of honor. For some reason unknown to me (the song was in G), she transposed the keyboard up a fourth. Me being stupid and assuming that there's no reason a digital keyboard would be out of tune, figured I was in BEAD for some reason also unknown. Rather than kick on the tuner that my cable was running through, I proceeded to tune up by ear to the keys a fourth too high and snapped my G. I ended up running around to three music stores at 4:30 on a Saturday afternoon with $4.83 in my pocket hoping somebody had a single, cheap G to sell me so that I could get back for the start of the set at 5pm.

Two bits of advice: Always have two of everything and don't trust the keyboard player to always be in tune.

Someone was fiddling around with the transpose button when he wasn't looking.
