So we played this show last Tuesday. The promoter was just Lookin for another band to fill up. We ended up being the last to play but before us were 3 hardcore bands. Typical Tuesday pole dancers and mosh pits. Each band said specifically "stick around for the other bands and don't leave cause that's not respectful". What happens when we get up? Most leave and only one sticks around. People are as$es. Goodthing we had the biggest following of people. We ended up putting on a great show so we thought and bought a round of drinks for our fans with the money we'd made that night.

Oh yeah. We are like a alternative rock with a bit of groovey bass lines. So that's why we didn't fit in.

Meh. I know it's the nice thing to do but sometimes people got other stuff they need to do - like go home and sleep before work or school the next morning.

I guess it has a lot to do with the fact that you didn't fit in. I've even seen people leave for a band and come back for the next one.

Hi.

Think about it.

Would You stick around if you didn't particularily like the music?
Would You stick around if the others in your group would leave?

I sure as hell wouldn't. And that wouldn't be personal, just how the night flows.

Regards
Sam

This never really bothered me. People will listen to what they want to hear.

The later you're on, the more other factors come in that help them decide if they're going to stay or not, even if they like you.

I'm a bit confused as you aren't saying who was leaving, the other bands or the fans.

If its the former (the bands), I wouldn't expect the other bands to stick around. This may just be the beginning of their night, and they may have another show to play, families or girl/boyfriends to get back to, or jobs/school/other obligations in the morning. Additionally, if you were a band in a lineup with three other similar bands and the closing band had nothing at all to do with your fan base, you probably wouldn't have stuck around either.

If its the latter (the crowd), I also wouldn't expect them to stick around. They probably came for the hardcore bands, and were more than likely fans of one or more of the bands that played before you. Obviously, these people are not obligated in any way to stick around and listen to music that they may not personally care for. This is just the same for yourself as well. I am sure that there is a genre of music or at the very least a band or song that you just can't stand listening to.

"To be respectful" is not a reason I want anyone seeing my band for. That's very insulting, they might as well say "the other bands suck and aren't worth seeing, so please stick around out of pity". One way to handle that, since you were on last anyway, would be to introduce the band with something like:

"The other bands asked y'all to stick around for our set to be respectful, but don't worry about that. Don't stick around to be respectful. Stick around 'cause we're AWESOME."

I think the point was the hypocrisy of whomever from the other bands told him to stick around out of respect, and then themselves left when his band came up. In which case, yeah, I agree. That is kinda messed up. Don't tell others to do what you won't do yourself.

I used to be all about staying until the last band, but lately I've been more understanding...

IME there's a few valid reasons to leave after you play:

GEAR: Most neighborhoods don't exactly make you want to put your 'net worth' in your car that doesn't lock right and has no alarm.

WORK: We're all dayjobbers, and half my band works weekends. Midweek and Sunday nights I just can't stay... If I do I'll have to call in sick.

MISC: Once we had a birthday party moving to my house after our show... I actually wanted to see some of the bands, but had to leave...

It's LAME. We do need to support the scene respectively, but in your case I wouldn't want a bunch of black shirts scoffing at my music anyways. Blame it on bad booking/promoting, not not some WOW players that don't want to sit through "rock and roll" at 1 am.

I don't think the problem was solely that they left. I think it was that they basically told the OP's band "you have to stay and watch my band, to be respectful" and then got up and left when the OP's band got on stage. Maybe the OP would've watched them anyway but the ones that left were being hypocrites regardless.

+1 - I have to wake up at 5:00 for work on weekends.

I've said that from stage even if I know I'll have to leave. I'm one person. On stage, that message is going out to everyone there... the kids who liked my band might listen and stick around.

It's respectful, and supporting, for bands to say that especially if they're opening.

Oh, that makes sense. I got the impression that they were talking to the OP not the crowd. You can disregard my other post.

There have been times when my band and our crowd were the ONLY people in the area to hear certain bands, but when it came time for us to play, they stayed for a song and left. Sometimes it's gotta be about respect and support of local musicians.

There have also been bands we've played with that came out to our other shows, and we to theirs. Of course, we like the music, but again, it's a show of support as well!

On the flip side of this, I once played a show with an opening band of pricks who, as soon as their set was done, announced into the mic "Okay everyone, we're done. You can leave now."

Okay, We normally hang for the 1st set and leave after that most of the time but, if we have a show the next night, than we only hang for a few songs hit the band on stage with a thumbs up, then hit the door

Let me get this straight......

The members from 3 bands left and you could tell? That's what? 12 or 14 people?? How many people were in attendance for this thing?

I'd concentrate on attracting and keeping fans that aren't in other bands. They tend to drink more, and show up more regularly.

Other bands sticking around will not benefit you in the long run. A loyal fanbase will. My advice is to never stick around for a band unless you truly want to, and to never expect them to stick around for you. Even if you stuck around for them.
