Talking Overkill? That's what we're all about.

Saturday night, my band played a basement gig in a house party. The main area of the basement was about 15' by 35', with maybe 7'6" ceilings. I'm guessing that if people were REALLY crammed in there, there might have been room for 40 people.

My band, being the reasonable, moderation-loving guys that we are, managed to pile my 750 watt Kustom/Tech21 8x10 rig, while our (one) guitarist was playing through a Marshall JCM800 half-stack (set up for a nice old-school heavy crunch) and a Mesa/Boogie F100 2x12 combo (set for a more modern high-gain sound). AT THE SAME TIME. It was simply glorious.

To top it all off, the house we were playing in looked and felt like if we were to turn up just a leeeetle bit more, it would have collapsed on us.

I'm just 185 miles up I-35 from Des Moines. I thought I heard a loud roar to the south this past Saturday night, but I just assumed it was a passing freight train. Funny, though, it lasted for several hours...

Well, that probably wasn't us... We pretty much blew through our set and were done in about 18 minutes. There were two other bands that played, but their volumes were a little bit more realistic for a basement show.

now thats what music is all about loud over the top and completely unsensible
a venue that size you'd probably get away with using 50w practice amps but i'm pleased to see you did the rock n roll thing of taking waaaaay more than you needed if your ever in the north west of england give us a shout you'd fit right in with us

Yeah, we're in the process of revamping our set; writing new songs and throwing out some older ones. Right now we don't have a ton of material to work with, so we usually throw in a cover or two, but we didn't really have anything practiced up this weekend. Our normal set length is about twice that.

This message sent by a 50+ year old, so take it as you see fit...

But if you don't use some kind of hearing protection when playing that loud, you'll be saying "what?" a lot when you reach 50.

Well keep working on your list... Even if you dont like covers they will help you get more gigs. Not too many gigs out there for a band that only does 3 or 4 orignals.

Not to sound cocky, but we don't have any desire to be a cover band to get gigs. We're not trying to make money with the band, we just love playing and writing music. When we do play covers, it's mostly for the irony factor. We're a post hardcore/hardcore/indie band, and any time we DO play a cover, it's been kicked up a few notches, and we usualy throw in a few breakdowns for good measure. The covers we do are songs like Crank Dat by Soulja Boy, Boom by POD, Misery Business by Paramour, and Only God Knows Why by Kid Rock. The idea with most of these songs (minus Misery Business) is that they're terrible, and we play them to poke fun at the songs and ourselves for actually taking the time to learn them. Plus, like I said, we usually play for closer to half an hour at least, which is pretty standard for a bands like us.

Also, Dave, don't worry about the hearing protection. I've got a set of Hearo Hi-Fi's that I've always got in at shows. I went to too many shows in high school without any hearing protection, and I learned my lesson with that. I can already notice some loss of hearing, so I'm making sure it doesn't get worse.
