P&W Bassists: What Changes Do You Make To Standards?

Sign in to disble this ad
Just what the title asks. Something like adding solos, extra sections, style changes, etc.
In the P&W band i'm in we add a higher energy kind-of-funky section to 'Blessed Be The Name', we also add synth and an intro solo to 'God Of Wonders'. These in addition to other changes to leads, bass fills, etc...

You?

While it's been years since my P&W playing days, I have fond memories of funking up Hillsong's "Shelter House" a la Flea. Somehow, I think Darlene would dig it tho'.

The drummer and I are pretty tight so we'll add some accents on certain beats to make it a little livelier. We've only got a guitarist who plays some songs on keyboard so we're limited to what we can actually do but the drummer and I do a good job adding a little more groove to the music. I'll find myself playing notes against what the guitarist is playing to fill up some spots and then I'll venture above the 12th fret at times to do some melodic fills when the dynamics allow it. The good thing about our drummer and I is that we've played together in a progressive rock/jazz fusion band for 4 years and understand dynamics and how each other control them. That helps out a lot.

I used to get the keys to do rain effects for the intro to "rain down", complete with gentle thunder. Sounds cheesy when you read about it, but it worked.
