At a party, without my bass... :@

We were doing a few of our songs, the drummer and I were belting out the lyrics and the guitarist was playing his acoustic. We weren't planning on playing but we just started goofing around. After we played a bit, I happened to walk by a conversation where this girl , who's family are avid guitarists, was going on about how "if you can play guitar you can automatically play bass". Of Course I interjected.

I just stopped and said "No F*ing way!" She instantly got all defensive, then tried to make it out that the bass is easy but is a key part. I just laughed at her and walked away, the fight wasn't worth it, she was pretty ignorant.

Left me pretty frusterated tho.

i really dont get how people can be so ignorant, i mean really? people who dont play any instrument and dont know much about them i dont mind, but other musicians who act like that, i just try to keep as far away from them as i can lol, there just too annoying

as stated in the other thread. the fact is that her statement was true, what is not said is how well a guitarist could play bass. if you play bass you can "play" cello, but no one's making any promises about how good it will sound!

Do they think it doesn't work the other way round too? I exclusively play bass, and i'm able to pick up guitars and play them without any extra teaching...

Yes, it somewhat works the other way around. But as with guitarists picking up a bass, we kind of end up playing bass on a guitar :P

But of course, playing one of those two is a good background for trying the other.

I understand that musical background helps, even more so with a stringed instrument but the claim she was making was that you could pick up a bass and go at it just as well as that guitarist could play the guitar. She was more or less saying the bass was the lesser instrument. It was irritating.

You should've just slept with her... THAT would've showed how much better bass players are than guitar players!

I have guitarist friends who constantly argue about bass with me, many of whom think that just because they can grab a bass and play a few notes, maybe even a couple of guitar licks that they can play bass.

They refuse any form of argument against it.

Exactly! she could feel your Bottom End... lol

what i wanted to say about that is if you follow her tought... Violin Player can play Upright Bass! so they can play electric bass... so they can play guitar! so guitar player can play violin and Violin player can play guitar!

i love party girls... lol
