It's certainly not my place to judge, except for one instance. I was once in a prog band with a really snooty guitarist. He had chops, but no sense of timing. It got to the point where the drummer and I dreaded his solos, because we had to decide whether to:
- Follow his tempo, therefore making a mess of things, or
- hold the rhythm down and make him "look bad" coming out of the solo.
We decided on the latter because it served the songs better. We didn't discuss it openly with him because we didn't want to hurt his feelings (he and the singer were friends). Apparently, his feelings were hurt anyway. He chose to blame me.
One day, I went to lunch before everyone else, and he told the band he wanted to run through some of the troublesome songs with him playing bass. He wanted to show the band how it "should be done."
Accounts vary, but apparently, it didn't go well on a number of levels, and he chose to quit that afternoon.
