The perfect metaphor on Bass vs. Guitar....

It's tough to communicate to younger players exactly what they're in for when it comes to the relative glamor to expect as a working bassist. I think the following picture, taken at a recent gig with my cover band, illustrates things far better than mere words could convey:

I think it's more the stage presence. Most chicks (and people in general) won't be able to tell if you're playing a bass or a freaking tuba, it's just where the music is coming from to them. So if you can look like you're having a good time, a good chunk of them will flock to you as much as they would to a guitard.

haha yeah, but I don't think the average person at gigs knows what bass and guitar are.

I disagree, most women will notice the guitard much sooner. Even if they find the instruments similar... what about guitar solos? I'm not talking about myself of course

Hi.

Thanks. I was HOPING the pic to have the roles reversed, but what the hell....

I don't see no ugly chicks in that picture. The boys however remind me all to painfully the contrast between our rythm section versus our lead singer. That's Your lead singer on the left, correct?

Strangely enough I'm the one getting the most action nowadays, must have something to do with the fact I was single for a while.

Regards
Sam

A longer strap helps. The 'bib' look just doesn't fly IME.

It has less to do with the number of strings and more to do with the package...

Now that Ive thought about it, I guess it depends on the show. The avg guitard is an attention whore anyway, thats why they need the solos =P

The flip side, of course, is that when we say "working bassist" we generally actually *work* a whole hell of a lot more than the average guitarist does. This can improve our odds over a given period of time.

My experience is, 90 percent (maybe more) of people only ever notice the singer. The most of the remaining 10 percent will notice the musician who does solos and plays fast/virtuoso stuff. In an average rock band that's usually the guitarist.

I agree 100%.

Its all about presence. Also I think, maybe this is just me, its about how you play too. An aggressive player will get noticed more than a soft player. Someone who is beating the piss out of the strings versus someone who you can barely see his plucking hand move. Then again, nothing will help a bassist that cant be heard in the crowd.

+1000 to the two posts above. It's all about stage presence. If you want to stand out as a bassist, you can. Just make sure you have a place near the front of the stage and rock out harder than anyone else in the band. You don't have to do anything extreme or obnoxious, just have a little bit of presence and attitude. I think this problem is more that it is just the personality of most bassists to be the guy in the flatcap thumping away in the background.
