Pet peeve: bass players who write "BASE"?!?!?!?

Sign in to disble this ad
Seriously, you can't spell the word for the instrument you play?

Look around you will see threads where someone writes "base line" or ads like "for sale: base guitar."

This is really just sad. It ain't that hard a word to spell.

Bass may be the base of the music, but it is spelled bass!

Your grammar and typing skill also constitute an opportunity for improvement.

Many members of TB do not live in North America or use English as a first language.

Let's try to create threads about positive things, yes?

I figure if they can't spell it, they're not really a bass player.

You need to take a look at the world around you. There are far more important things to be bothered about than that.

Recently, I saw an entry in the ebonics dictionary for the word "occurances". The entry said that "occurances" was "occurences spelt by a moron". Of course, "spelt" is a type of wheat and is not the same as "spelled". Yes, some like to use spelt in place of spelled but it's not proper English.

Moral of the story: Don't sweat the petty stuff...and don't pet the sweaty stuff.

Making a typo when typing "threads" is not at all the same as using the incorrect word for the instrument one plays. I know "ain't" is improper - I used it intentionally to make a point. Again, this differs from misusing the word for the instrument you play.

I might believe that someone wrote "base" as a typo when they meant "bass," if only I had not seen it occur so frequently.

I'm not talking only about talkbass - where even non-native English speakers might notice that it is TALKBASS and not TALKBASE - I'm talking about things like classified ads in the papers.

But most importantly, it's the humor forum dude. Lighten up, Francis.

Someone gets the humor here. Too many serious types.

My opinions are bassed on the fact that I play base.

Spelt is proper UK English.

There is always going to be people trying to belittle the OP. Whats the big deal about him posting a thread like this? Its not like hes wasting valuable space on Talkbass. A little respect for each other goes a long way. No one here is a better person just because they didn't make a typo.

In regards to the original post I have seen so many people spell it that way, usually they are posers.

Check it out;

Do they play? Do they play well?
Does it matter if they play well, if they enjoy themselves?
Does it matter how they spell?

The Dude abides.

A pet peeve is something that is a slight annoyance.

So, far more important things (such as world hunger) in the world to be bothered about are not pet peeves, rather they are "far more important things to worry about." Not minor annoyances.

Bassically what you're saying is, the base player forms the bass of the band?
