Play Gig, Get Barred From Venue

Sign in to disble this ad
<calm rant>

We get called up to play a small venue at the last moment, do it as a favour for the bar manager, paid 1/3 of our usual fee.

Play a good gig, usual amounts of energy etc.

Afterwards I note a can of beer in my cable bag, excellent, I am sitting there sipping it while DJ spins some numbers.

Security staff see me, grab and crush can, eject me from premises while promising me I will never darken their door again.

</calm rant>

Probably the first time "I'm with the band" hasn't worked for me. Given I live in Ireland, I was probably lucky they didn't beat the sh*t out of me!

Security staff wouldn't generally be known for their negotiation talents..being 6 ft 4, I generally draw their ire too..

Yeah, drinking alcohol purchased outside the venue is a surefire way to get escorted out. This phenomenon is international.

Maybe it's local to where I live but it tends to be usual enough to bring your own when you're gigging...we usually do so..

Never happens here in the States. Bottled water is usually acceptable ( For band members) but alcohol? No way.

This is why our singer and guitarist bring a "bottled water" filled with Patron. So far, no one's ever caught on.

Did you talk to the bar manager?

A can of warm beer in your bag?

Yeah, you can pretty much put any clear liquid in there you want.

I'm a beer drinker and usually drink only 2 or 3 all night, on breaks and water the rest of the time.

Happened locally just a few months ago. Band (not mine) is halfway through the 2nd set when the bar owner and the bouncer come over to the soundman (story source) and tell him to shut it down. He gets them to hold off till the end of the song and proceeds to find out why. Turns out the drummer had brought a cooler full of beer into the bar in violation of state law. A minor riot ensues and the band is barred from playing there again.

I had a real similar experience years ago. We had a guitar player that would bring a cooler of beer and hide it behind his amp. Apparently the beer he brought in cans the bar only sold in bottles. Luckily the entire band has a gift for acting dumb. It was like a Vinny Bobarino convention: Huh? What? Who? Huh?

We didn't play that bar for 3 or 4 years after that.....

That's good. An outright ban for such a small indiscretion is extreme.

In their mid-90s heyday, Guided By Voices would have a cooler right up there on stage like a monitor. They must have negotiated special arrangements with the venues....

In many states, if not all, bringing "outside" alchohol into a licensed drinking establishment can be grounds for said establisment to lose thier liquor license. I'm not surprised they, or any, bar acted this way. You're risking their business. Not defending it, but that's just the way it (usually) is. And, of course, I have NEVER been a party to such behavior

I just have a dislikeable appearance..I get barred from places I haven't even set foot in before. Needless to say as a 6 foot 4 bassist I am as quiet as mouse...my friends find this hilarous...I look like an ex-con...

Have to collect my amp from the venue tonight so we'll see..
