So today our band (chaplin) played at the queen bee. I had to use a brand new head and cab ive never used or even got to TOUCH before and had to set up my bass on it in less then 2 minutes. So almost the entire time i was trying to fiddle with my bass knobs trying to get it to sound decent. (it sounded SOO bad and i was sad because my bass is the most beautiful sounding fender when it has the right cab/head.) But anyways thats not what this is about. Half way through our first song i believe it was. The cord FALLS OUT of the head. yes. It simply just falls out. And I couldn't hear myself and I was messing around trying to figure it out. (i found and fixed the problem in a matter of 6-10seconds.) But it was somewhat embarrassing because it was the one spot the bass is supposed to shine. :\ But other then the EQ being horrible. The "sound tech" in the back doing nothing to balance us out and us being rushed onto and off stage. We won the hearts of just about everyone in the crowd and everyone was cheering before our first song was even over (we got to play 4 songs.) So we did great but somehow didnt win. Some Stoner band (reason i say that is because it smelt like duubies when we came in half way through there set... they were a generic Ska Band) got first and a Generic metal band (who were great musicians and deserved it) got second. Just a little bummed that the judges were so narrow minded... v.v But It was great, but I dont recommend playing there. Anyone else play at the Queen bee? Whats your Experiences? |

My band played there about a year ago. Nice enough venue, with a decent sized stage. Felt a little out of place though because of the all-ages aspect. I'm much more used to playing to the 20's and 30's that make up the bar scene.

I don't frequent North Park much, but i do remember seeing at least one show listed in the Reader. Didn't they host a Steampunk event during Comic-con?
Right there with you on the whole all ages vs bar scene thing...

Right there with you on the whole all ages vs bar scene thing... | Don't know about the steampunk thing, but wouldn't surprise me. It doesn't seem to be a dedicated nightly rock venue, it's more like an art and culture center that sometimes hosts live music.
I don't know north park that well with the exception of the bars we play. It seems to have a better night life than the rest of the city.

Guitar plays a little riff. Everything stops all the band yells "STFU" but uses all the words... v.v I look over at my friend and say "isnt this all ages?" xD But it is an art and culture place. I didnt like the people there though. Pretty mean. :\ |

I hope he got the time wrong there, but yeah I hear its a fairly good venue. rock out anyways tho, right?

Time to have fun. | Be careful with the stage at the Ruby Room. I managed to dump my amp off my cab because of the cheap plywood moving too much under our band's heaviness. Quote:

Real dark.. and yes... dismal. Haven't been there in quite some time. The sound system had been upgraded however so it wasn't TOO bad.
6jase5 - How is Soda Bar? Ruby Room has been booking some cool shows. We haven't played there yet. We are playing 710 Club in PB on Dec 10th if any of you other thread hijackers want to roll out..

I don't know of any clubs in LA, OC or SD that have built in crowds just because the club keeps the talent level high. That's the sad part. To me every stage has it's challenges and most times the sound for the band will be mediocre when playing a 30-45 min set (one of the sound guys at the Roxy in LA and The Griffin in SD defy that rule....great guys).
I never care if I win or lose a battle of the bands. I realize that it's usually a few judges who aren't really neutral and then depends on how many fans you could drag to woo hoo. I've actually won a bunch and lost a bunch in this and past bands. It was funny once to win first out of 50 and then come in 5th out of 5 a week later with the same set. When the judges have dreadlocks and Marley shirts, it's rare that the heavy rock or punk band beats out the ska, dub or reggae band.....go figure. |
