playing bass with a drum circle?

I went to a birthday party last night for a guitar playing friend I jam with at times. He told me to come prepared to play and after a few tunes with guitar and bass (and some hand drums) a full fledged drum circle played for about 2 hours (he plays hand drums as well). They wanted me to keep playing bass, which I did, and it was a blast. With no guitar to follow I played percussive type lines and followed the drums as best I could. They liked what I played and there may be an opportunity to do this on a regular basis. I was wondering if anyone else plays with a drum circle and could offer advice on playing with one.

I've done it and look forward to do it again... it's a great experience... you can impose whatever harmony you enjoy plus you can just groove away...

It's great fun and you enjoy real groove freedom... be sure to wonder off the safe zone!

Yes! When I was a freshman in college, I used to meet with a big group of musically minded individuals every Sunday for soup night. Everyone would bring ingredients that would go in a big pot and while it was all cooking for a few hours, we'd get stoned and play music. Most of the people there had drums, so there were several times that I found myself jamming with an entire drum circle. Really awesome way to let loose and get a great flowing free-form bass solo
