My band went through the same thing...you gotta try to jump on a bill with the known bands...not to mention you do get "exposure"...from the owners of the venue. If you keep coming up there to play...they'll remember you and ask you to play more.

no people and no money is a tough call. in the early stages of a band its worth it to go out and play. you need the practice/experience. my band usually asks for a guarantee outside of hometown shows, so if no one shows, we still get paid. and that leaves the promoter/club with something to lose, and they'll put in some effort promoting your show as well.

^ That. YUP most of us that have been around the block have played the " Ethan Allen " tour. That is playing to the furniture. What ever, even though it is disappointing, being paid makes it more like a PAID dress rehearsal.

I started playing out in chicago when I was 19, all our friends were teenagers, some with good fake ID's, the hot girls usually got in, but we'd have a line around the block at biddy mulligans, and they wouldn't be able to let most of them in, moving on bands gotta stick together, I used to run with quite a few bands back in the early nineties, and I don't think it was any easier to get on the scene back than, especially for a hippie jam band when every one down at the Avalon is still rockin' out in spandex playing frickin' Winger. On one occasion a good friends band got us a weekend gig at Lounge Axe (who wouldn't give us the time of day before than), any ways they had regular gigs there, and got us in telling them we were from Minnesota, we ended up head-lining on a saturday night, and made a lot of cash..make nice with the other kitties bottom-line.....good luck=) brian

People I know from Chicago say everyone walks every where there, only rich people drive. I wouldn't walk to see a new band. Get out of Chicago.

Is your band or the other bands you're playing with doing any promotion in these areas? flyers etc? or are you just showing up and playing?
