I've been playing for two and one-half years. I've played rehearsed material in public before, but never had the guts to get up with strangers in a jam, until this afternoon. I wasn't a thing of beauty, but I wasn't a train wreck, either.

This gets easier, right? (Or, at least, you get numb to the snarling dogs in your stomach?)

After you play for many years your enemy is no longer stage fright ... But stage boredom ... You have to fight becoming bored ...

Congrats! Glad to hear you did OK.

Weather permitting, I'm supposed to do my first open jam tomorrow night (we're supposed to get snow, I'm hearing it might be canceled). I'm kind of nervous but I'm also getting pretty psyched for it. My instructor keeps telling me I'm thinking about it to much and the only thing I need to do is show up and play. Glad he has confidence in me, I'm guessing I'll start feeling it once the first song is done.

Remember to report back after you do your second one so you can compare.

EDIT -

Hard for me to imagine hitting that point right now, but I can see how it can happen. Hope I either never get there or I find ways to fight it.

Watch out, you may start liking it too much and forget how to play with yourself. What a nightmare

Way to go, Katz. I played bass for around 10 years before I found myself in a band that I thought worthy of giggin. I've been playing now for about 25 years and still get nervous before each gig. The boys think I'm a putz for getting nervous but, seemingly, that's how it's always gonna be for me. However, as soon as the first note is played it's all peaches n' cream so I'm cool with it.

Well, I'm kind of bummed, it did get canceled tonight. Now I have to find another Tuesday night when I can do it.

This is actually the second time in a month I made arrangements to go out on "a school night" and play at this jam and it got canceled. Wonder if should be taking that as a sign ....
