possibly the best "steal" of all time

if this isnt the right place, would a mod move it for me please?

so my cousin's graduation open house was at my grandmas last sunday. her neighbor is a family friend, him and my dad grew up together, he is also a musician. we always talk about our gear and our plans and everything. he invited me over to play with some of his toys. he is the type of person, that if he sees a good deal on an instrument he buys it.

he had a washburn p/j bass strung with flats, that i fell in love with, a gibson acoustic he paid $40 for, a pink mexi fender strat he got new for $300, and he went in the corner and grabbed a fender musicman guitar.

i could tell how old it was, double check the serial it was from 1966 and in awesome shape. i played a few things on it, it sounded phenominal! when i mentioned it he says, "yeah some farmer was selling it. the price was $7, i gave them a $20 and said keep the change"

i said, even if this is a fake, he had some knockoff tele too, the parts are worth more than that. nope sure enough it is a 1966 fender musicmaster.

valued at $1000 est. resale
paid $20

no sh*t. i told him that and he would have expected around $400-500. lets just say he is very happy, and im jealous.

it looks just like this:

wheres mine? i want a deal like that. he said he take me "shopping" one day. who knows?

Why that's amazingly ridiculous. Stories like that pop up from time to time. They are what they are.

my mom had a antique shop a while ago & an old farmer's wife came in & sold her a 1966 harmony H-22 for 20 bucks. she gave it to me & i love it, i figured out approx. how much is was worth & she gave the lady a few more bucks since it was such a steal.

the H-22 is pretty sweet too, it's a hollow body & it has a crazy triangle pickguard that covers the F hole. it also has a switch to go from a treble setting to deeeeep bass thunder.

My guitarist has one of those things. Its like playing a small toy, if you strum to hard the strings end up everywhere. Oh and the lack of a bridge pickup makes it somewhat a one trick pony. On a wee Fender I would rather have a bridge pickup and no neck pickup personally.

Brings back some memories.

I sold a bunch of gear, including my bass to follow the Dead in my wayward youth. After that was over, my broke arse scaped up enough money to buy a 67 Musicmaster from a guy in town for $75. It got me back into gigging, and from there I played hundreds of gigs with that "little bass" as everyone called it. Best $75 bucks I ever spent.

I sold the bass for about $300, since it wasn't stock. I think at the time it was worth about $450-500. One of the only basses I wish I never sold, just for the nostalgia of it.

I bought a 1976 Precision for $100...at the time I had no idea what it was worth, so I talked him down from $120.

I just bought an SQ series P bass from '84... All original parts... est. value? About 500. What did I pay? $125 and a sh*tty squier strat. Good deals are rare...

That's a sweet guitar That kind of buy nowadays could only happen where there's no internet access. Otherwise it's so easy to find the worth of something

The deals are out there. I picked up a '76 mustang bass for $120 in 1987, sold it in 2005 for $780.

Still my best find has been a '77 memphis P bass. Got it for $60 bucks and it has more personality and playability than basses costing 10 times that.

I had a '79 Ric. I get confused whether it was a 4001 or 4003. But I bought it at a pawn shop for $150.
