So, i joined a black metal(ish) band with some good friends a month ago.
So far things are going very well. BUT... our songs are on the more ambient/droney side of things and practice can get a little boring.
Well... yesterday was... different.
Why was it different?
Well, the band leader (who is Norweigen and JUST returned to the states from attending college there)... answered the door in black leather pants, white high tops... and nothing else.
He then said (in an awesome Metalocalypse-esque voice) "today we try somethink new... today we practice our circles."
Circles, apparently, reffers to headbanging in a circle.
He then went on... "but we need the right circling atmosphere"
We proceded to the band room, which was dark... except for about a dozen brutal looking candles.
And so, we went over the droney 8+ min. long songs practicing our 'circles' in brutal ambience. And today my neck is killing me... but man, i had a great time.
No real point to the story, just, crazy how much of a difference altering your surroundings can make practice.

Also, in regards to head-banging... waist length dread locks don't exactly help in bangover pains

I've found that being in a dance-punk and a black metal band, there is sometimes an awesome environment to play in.
My black metal band was in a large, dark, dark, dark warehouse. My dance-punk band was in an extremely small room, where the other member (drummer) and I could barely fit. Made it exciting.

| | | | i find it hard to get bored with ambient music, unless it's just repetitive. however i find black/death metal cookie monster crap boring and repetitive as hell... i guess it's all perception

| the leather pants store, duh.
OP: sounds silly, weird, creepy, and fun... which, to my understanding, are the proper elements for any black metal band.

I know a couple of guys who formed a black metal band around 1995 or 1996, wrote some songs, made big spiked armbands, rehearsed, and played their first gig. Their arms were killing them after just a few songs because they never practiced with the heavy armbands on. They learned that lesson and wore those things to practice for a few weeks till they got used to them.
