Pre-Ice Jams...

Sign in to disble this ad
We had an excellent gig on Saturday. A lot of people came, and we played *very*...VERY...well. Best gig ever with this band, hands down.

A bunch of my old bandmates came...the people I've been jamming with just whenever we have time. Fans of my old bands came, too. Some from Houston!

So, they got to know my current band, and they had a *great* time, and everyone got acquainted.

One of my old bandmates and I hatched a diabolical plan.

Since we had the ice storm coming in, we decided to get everyone together and play at our favorite local bar on Sunday afternoon/evening. They were having a barbeque event, and welcomed the music.

OMG!!! It was completely awesome! My two guitarist friends came, and traded licks and vocals with our guitarist. I got to sing, too. The drummer's brother, who is a *very* good drummer with another band, came and played. We had a good buddy on washtub bass. He's, like...jazz washtub. Really wonderful. We had people come up and play harmonica. We had another guitarist show up and play.

I held the bass down all day long. The only time I stopped was to run an errand for my son, which took about 15 minutes. (Had to get Final Fantasy X before the freeze came down.)

Respect and admiration were won on all sides. Minds were opened. Learning was accomplished. Opportunities were seeded. Fun was had by all.

I love it when a plan comes together.

Sweet! I love that kind of scene. Right before Christmas I put together a club gig with a pick up band for a drummer I played with 30 (!) years ago, two Talkbassers, a band I used to play in that one of the Talkbassers and my longtime drummer both play in now, and my current jazz trio. That's three bands, with various permutations for the late night jam. We played until after the lights went out, literally.

Those put-together jams really are the best, no? The way the different players relate, the different combinations...no wonder we don't wanna stop just because the lights are out, or there's an ice storm on the way!

He wishes!!! But he asked for X. He figured I would be able to find it used, very affordably, and he'd have good entertainment while he was stuck at home.

It really was awesome. Musically, and in many other ways. I feel it helped the band situation to get them acquainted with my ex-band members. Opened their minds quite a lot!

And the music...just fantastic, really. We played everything we could think of.

Stirring the pot once in a while is great. My band mates host a couple of parties every year that draw dozens of good players, it's a real hoot. I had a great time jamming old jazz tunes with a bunch of 17 year olds at the last one. Shoulda seen the look on their faces when I suggested we play some hip-hop, then grabbed the mike!

Thanks, sugar.

We have a regular gig there this weekend. If any of the folks who came this last Sunday show up, we'll probably have them up to play. Nuthin' but positives.
