edit: We played without a real band name since we don't even have one yet. The event planner just gave us a name without telling us.

More power to ya Jazzin. I'd be super stoked to be gigging fresh out of high school, but I wasn't that forunate. And you have to start somewhere.

Regarding the argument:
I'd like to eat ice-cream for a living, but unfortunately there are lots of people who would do it for free.
If I think playing bass is so fun that I'll gladly do it for free, I should be able to do that without feeling that I'm stealing from someone. If a better bassists wants to get paid, they'll just have to find a gig that requires someone of their caliber instead of a mediocre bassist who will do it for free.
