Last night my kid nephew (he's 13), who has been taking guitar lessons for about a year called me saying he needs to talk to me about something kind of important. Of course I asked him right away if everything is alright and he says, "Yeah. Well...no" so I told him he better start spilling it. He sighs and tells me, "I know I'm not supposed to know this, but I found out that my mom and dad are getting me a new guitar and amp for Christmas". Me, thinking this must be pretty awesome for a kid who has been playing a cheap starter guitar through a dinky battery-powered amp for the past year, is wondering why this is upsetting news. "That rules! What's the problem then, man?", I ask him. He responds, "Well, I know that's good. My problem is that even though I like playing guitar and I'm doing really well with my lessons, I want to play bass.......like you".

It literally brought a tear to this dreadlocked, bearded man's eye. I assured him that I wouldn't let on that he found out about his gift but I would talk to his mom and dad immediately!

Wow, that gave me a warm and fuzzy feeling . It's especially the way you describe how hesitant he was that made the whole thing so feel-good, hehe. He must make a talkbass account

I feel your pride, man! The same thing happened to me about 3 years ago. My nephew had started out on guitar, then told me he'd rather play bass. I encouraged him, and helped him find a nice deal on a sunburst Highway 1 Jazz. I gave him a tort p/g I had laying around, and he was a happy camper. It's always nice when you can help steer these youngsters in the proper direction...

That's awesome! I got a feeling that my little nephew is gonna be a drummer, but my sister is due to have another in a few weeks so there's still hope that I can get him to play in a few years

lets all hope that you dont turn into that other guy, who recently bought an ampeg cab and gave his old peavey head to his nephew. Who then went and traded it for a new CRATE 220 watt head and 410.

I would encourage him to play both. It'll make him a more well rounded musician.

Awesome story, thanks for posting it.

That's pretty much what I told him. He's already a pretty good guitar player considering he's been playing for only a year and a smart kid...he'll figure it all out. I can't wait to see his face when he finds his shiny new P-bass under the tree! Although a devoted four-stringer myself, I do own a couple of guitars and tinker around with them quite often. I've even played guitar in a couple of bands back in the day. My wife's banjo, on the other hand, is something that will probably always be completely alien to me!

Glad you appreciated my story.
