Last night my kid nephew (he's 13), who has been taking guitar lessons for about a year called me saying he needs to talk to me about something kind of important. Of course I asked him right away if everything is alright and he says, "Yeah. Well...no" so I told him he better start spilling it. He sighs and tells me, "I know I'm not supposed to know this, but I found out that my mom and dad are getting me a new guitar and amp for Christmas". Me, thinking this must be pretty awesome for a kid who has been playing a cheap starter guitar through a dinky battery-powered amp for the past year, is wondering why this is upsetting news. "That rules! What's the problem then, man?", I ask him. He responds, "Well, I know that's good. My problem is that even though I like playing guitar and I'm doing really well with my lessons, I want to play bass.......like you".
It literally brought a tear to this dreadlocked, bearded man's eye. I assured him that I wouldn't let on that he found out about his gift but I would talk to his mom and dad immediately!

My nephew had started out on guitar, then told me he'd rather play bass. I encouraged him, and helped him find a nice deal on a sunburst Highway 1 Jazz. I gave him a tort p/g I had laying around, and he was a happy camper. It's always nice when you can help steer these youngsters in the proper direction...

He's already a pretty good guitar player considering he's been playing for only a year and a smart kid...he'll figure it all out. I can't wait to see his face when he finds his shiny new P-bass under the tree! Although a devoted four-stringer myself, I do own a couple of guitars and tinker around with them quite often. I've even played guitar in a couple of bands back in the day. My wife's banjo, on the other hand, is something that will probably always be completely alien to me!
Glad you appreciated my story.
