She told me if I bought it that she would move out becouse lately ave been buying too many instruments. Lol.

If I buy any new music gear, my wife assumes she can buy something of equal value. So I always assume that whatever I buy will cost twice as much It's easy to hide effects (she still doesn't know about my VT Bass pedal) but basses are hard to hide.

If anything, I'm the one saying, "Slow down with the gear purchases"(half-heartedly to be honest)
The studio has taken over the house, between the recording gear, racks, amps, guitars, keyboards, PA's and percussion, there is little room for anything else. Last week I walked in the door and nearly tripped over her latest purchase; timbales! What the heck? Why? She says it will make a nice prop when she sings with the band. OK, Sheila E., you go girl.

My advice to the secret gear hording people is "Don't Get married" if your lying and hording now and you get married she will eventually find out about the $3000 worth of gear she never was going to know about. It'll alll come out with the divorce court and you will lose more half of all those purchases anyway. You will only lose half if your honest about it (or nothing at all cause I bet the lying is what will cause her to divorce you)

Good responses. I am single so I have no worries in this department. However, I currently live in a apartment where I don't trust stuff when being delivered to be just put in front of my door so I have it delivered to my parents house near by. It's always funny when I show up to pick it up and my parents give me the "what more?!" or "what did you get this time?" phrase.

Sneaking stuff into the house just isn't a good idea. Like a lot of people here, I have done it . However, it always caused problems when I got caught, and understandably so.

So now we agree that, in order to for me to buy, I have to sell. Honestly, I think that's a pretty fair arrangement. It gives me a way to try things to see if I like them and it also prevents me from spending money on so much stuff that I simply can't use it all.

Just curious as to why you consider this a "funny" story. These threads pop up all the time and I just shake my head...as someone who was once married to a woman who hated the fact that I was a musician and the money spent on gear, I still was totally open about my purchases. That had no impact on the marriage, but it's much nicer now being with someone who at least gets why I might want to purchase something.

If you have to hide a $100 purchase from your s/o, then your relationship is most likely suffering elsewhere. Maybe that's not your case, but it usually seems to be.

This sounds a bit like our home. The rooms in our apartment are small and there is no way you could sneak anything in even if you wanted to. The first thing you see when you come in the door is my bf's late father's 1960 Ludwig Silver Sparkle drum kit. Sacrificed the dining table in order to set it up. The laptop and Motu unit live on the coffee table for quick recording sessions. Amps and mic stands are clustered on the other side of the room for my personal practice. Our home office houses his large Accugroove cab. At the moment, the bf (bassist for our band) is waiting on funds from the settlement of his father's estate. What will he do with the money? More gear, of course! An Accugroove 2x10 cab, a new bass (hasn't decided which one yet) and the piece de resistance, the new Axe FX II from Fractal. He's been jonesing for that Axe FX ever since they announced it was coming. He's even got a picture of it on his computer desktop. I hope he gets it soon because it's pretty much all he talks about. Wonder how long it will take for him to stop talking about it once he finally get it?

It's not really a good idea to go out of your way to hide these tings from your wife. Eventually it will come back to haunt you. Of course, if you buy all your gear with gig money she really doesn't have any say in it anyway. At least mine don't. She never says anything about what I buy anyway though so..
