It was a few years ago. Quite a large outdoor bar gig at New Years and the bassist stomped off stage at the start of the last set. The lead guitarist took over the bass but couldn't play his way out of a paper bag.

So I volunteered my services as they were pretty good, playing stuff I knew and I was relatively sober.... "Bro! can you really play bass?" "Yep", "OK then". They were a bit dubious but the gig was tanking going from rockin' 4 piece to a lousy three piece and they all knew it.

Long story short we rocked out the last set.

Anyone else go from half drunk audience member to rocking the joint?

One time Jaco and Victor were playing a bass duet on stage and they both suddenly became ill, fortunately I was there to jump up on stage and fill their shoes.
Everyone said I was a far superior musician.

Subsequently My skills got them fired from both their bands and I was asked to fill their positions... lol...

On Vacation with my Parents when I was 17, the band in the Hotel had a bust up so I voulunteered to play Bass. Cutting the long story short, I spent the remainder of my vacation playing with these guys - including the two nights at the other Hotel in the group down the road, got paid (quite a lot for a kid) and got all the free Beer I wanted!!. Best vacation I'd ever had up to then.

This was the springboard I needed to move forward, I'd now played in a professional band and was not overawed by the experience, in fact it felt very comfortable!!. I got home, jojned a semi-pro band that kept me in Beer, Cigarettes and Petrol. Two years later I turned down University and got a "full time" job playing Bass.

A friend had a 12 piece motown cover band that I used to go watch play (and they were pretty hot). During one of the sets one night, someone broke into the green room and stole wallets and purses. Obviously, there were a very small amount of band members after break that didn't have to file a report with the police; just the pianist, drummer and my friend (who's a sax player).

He looked over at me and dragged me onstage. Announced to the audience what was happening, and then we proceeded to do a small jazz set until everyone got back, at which point the motown band picked it back up.
