Angry In recent news: fretless basses are "stupid"

Sign in to disble this ad
It's the end of FCA (Fellowship of Christian Athletes) for the week and this gorgeous girl walks my way. I see the guitar strapped to her back and I'm thinking, "Oooo.... a music girl, gorgeous, Christian, friend of a friend.... this is already going good!" She says hi and takes a look at my fretless bass and asks if she can try it out....

HER: I don't know how to play it

ME: Well, it's the same tuning as the top 4 strings of a guitar.... EADG

HER: Oh! So, I can play it the same way?

ME: Yeah, but because it's a fretless, you have to press down ON the fretlines.

HER: Well, that's stupid. Why would anyone want to take the frets out? Here....

And she hands it back....

Everything I once thought 'bout her musical abilities flushed right down the toilet along with everything she said....

And by the way, my mom can't understand why I want to get and Ibanez SRX695 and replace the FB with a fretless ebony FB.... is this common with all women? UGH!

It's not how long and smooth your fretboard is, that will impress her...

Lol, she did. The guy we're both friends with reluctantly plays a Deluxe P for the FCA band. However, he's a guitard who thinks riffs, scales, bass solos, and anything but chords and root note bassists belong in the trash. So what little bass she is exposed to probably has to do with bass fishing....

Did you attempt to actually respond to her question? Might have been an opportunity to teach her just a bit of open-mindedness - and even humility...

First time Mrs Jazz Ad went into my house : Ohhhh, you play bass? Unlined fretless, no less? It must be really difficult but it sounds so good. Ever heard of Steve DiGiorgio?
She was an instant keeper.

MM, yeah.... lol. Trust me, I took my baby back and said, "THIS is why...." and proceeded to play a funk jam using vibrato, slides, and the full mwah tone only a fretless can give. She walked away.... saying nothing.

Btw Jazz Ad, does your wife have a sister living in NC and college age?

Too many typos/reedits tonight.... sorry ppl

Yes, FCA is the bomb. I was supposed to be bassist when some of the seniors left due to grad. But they decided to stick it out one more semester. Do you play for a band in your FCA?

She's young and ignorant of the bass, as are 95% of people. Don't hold it against her. Show her how to play the thing and then email her some links to some YouTube fretless videos. She'll learn why they take the frets out.

True that.... I'll have to add her on FB or something lol, haven't seen her in a while. Just remembered the story today.

Nonetheless, Jaco was a visionary....

Ain't just women who have no idea what a fretless is, or why it's nice to have a fretless in your stable if you can play it well. As above, at least she knew it was a bass. Too many of my friends keep on refering to my basses as 'guitars' even after my having corrected them a few times; I no longer bother. Funny, the one friend I have who immediately identified the instrument I brought along to practice on while visiting her as a bass is someone who plays guitar...

A fretless is nice to have even if you can't play it well. It keeps the simple things interesting. I'm not all that good, but I enjoy mine and have recorded with it, although I usually play a fretted bass.

And no, Im not in the band. Sadly we are about 10 kids, though most of us are musicians. I might have to talk to em, see if we can work something out! Thanks for the idea!
