Response from a Singer who wantes to auditon for my gig

Sign in to disble this ad
SETUP: This is an original funk rock band however we are asking singers to learn 2 covers (just to see where they are at and LK always on the run is one of them).

I guess this bothered him...

Me being able to sing lenny kravitz - always on the run, wont determine whether or not my vocal style will mesh with your sound.. if you want I can sing to the hundreds of songs I sing everyday in my car and you can listen... and you can see my wide range of versatility... I took a listen to your tracks, and unfortunately not sure if we will work.. I don't really have time at 26 to drive all the way to boston to sing a lenny kravitz song.. if you wanted to get together and try and have me put down some melodies to your songs you have written it would be my pleasure.. I am not concerned if you guitarist has mastered a lenny kravitz song, I am concerned with whether or not the music will be a good enough foundation to make integrate melodies.. I am not opposed to playing some covers at shows or for practice, but I a dumbfounded by the mindset of why being able to sing a cover would determine whether a vocalist would fit in the band...

Thanks,

Yeah he seems to be awfully defensive and overly dramatic. Sounds like trouble. Avoid!!

My email to him was that we are asking eveyone to learn these 2 covers.

Nothing actually that hard.

He acts like I asked for 2 pints of blood or something.
I have no idea about the time comment and being 26 he only lives about .5 hour way from where we rehearse.

I was very cordial to this guy and wished him the best of luck.

I have to admit though I was blown away by his response because I asked the guy to learn 2 covers before jumping into our original stuff.

If you haven't already cut ties with this guy, ask him why he believes he is in such a position to determine how he should audition for your band when he is, in fact, AUDITIONING FOR YOUR BAND.

I'll never understand why some people can put themselves on such an unnecessarily high pedestal when they are essentially trying to sell themselves to someone else.

It's more like you asked him for 2 pints of another bodily fluid, something that would take a little time and "effort." Sounds like a prima donna anus. Skip that audition slot.

Well, auditions are always 2 way streets.

Not sure I would force someone to learn a LK song for an oruiginals band. Maybe give him a selection of songs and let him pick a couple. Unless if that is you guys only know the LK stuff.

I'm in the middle on this one. Him learning a cover tune won't show what he can do with your originals but if that's what you asked then he should do it.

This is a karaoke singer who thinks he wants to be in a band. FAIL.

The real question is: Can you sing some of the original vocals/melodies you've done before?

We often speak of integrating melodies at our band practices.

I agree that auditions are 2-way streets, but his stated credentials are his singing in his car. If this was an established musician, I'd cut slack, but for some 26 yo rookie, he's awfully full of himself

Thanks,
I'd just tell him to not worry about it, and then I'd move on. He was polite enough.

Maybe he could sing the LK song in his car, perhaps he might find a willing audience also!
