Back to the topic at hand, I didn't think the "singer's" response was at all polite--and I probably wouldn't have been as polite in my response as the OP. I mean, he was kind of insulting about the material the OP wanted him to audition with--who goes into an audition with arguments about what they want you to play? If you don't like the music that band wants you to do, you don't respond to the ad.

Personally, I don't think it's a good idea to use cover tunes to audtion people when the target material is original music. I would think you, the auditioner would want to get a feel for what the person is going to do on your songs that have your particular nuance to them. There aren't many originals bands that I have auditioned for that didn't use their own music as the audition piece. |

If you do not already have recorded originals and you give a singer a cover tune to audition with, you can determine whether he or she actually knows what they are about. *Then* see how they do with the originals.
The singer would likely not have drawn such ire had he been quite a bit less bitter and nasty in his response. Yon singer doth snark overmuch, it seems. A marker that he's probably going to just be a snarky person, and who needs that?

Sounds like a guy who can't find a gig, if he's even considering something that he isn't into.
End of story. Glad you had a happy ending. |
