Just posting this for posterity: my band played its first "real" gig last night, at a small indie rock club in Des Moines. We were scheduled 3rd out of 4 bands, opening for The Weight (country rockers from Brooklyn). Observations:
1. There were maybe 40 people there, counting the headlining band who was waiting for us. Actually not bad for our first show, on a weeknight in a small city.
2. Musically it was a huge success. We played well, people were into it, and I think everyone agreed that part of it couldn't have gone much better.
3. The guys from The Weight tried to convince us to switch slots with them so they could play earlier and get on the road to NY. I guess it was the last date of a month-long tour for them. We argued, but eventually gave in. As it turned out, they were busy getting drunk and didn't load in soon enough....so we went on 3rd as planned.
4. In the end, the aforementioned dudes from that band were great. A few of them came up front for our set, and were really into it. They told us afterwards that we would have been the perfect fit to tour with them, which was at least a nice thing to say. So we returned the favor and stayed up front for them til the end, and by then there was hardly anyone left in the bar.
5. All in all, lots of fun. This is a hobby project as far as I'm concerned - not giving up my day job (although we do original material), so considering that, I think we're well on the way.
Thanks for reading - I'll post some photos later......had a friend take lots.
