Sat in Today on a Gig

A pretty cool thing happened to me today. I have a pretty nice '66 Chevy pickup that I had pre-registered for a car show today. I got up at 8 am, went over the truck with a fine-toothed comb to get it show-ready. I then went back in the house to take a shower and when I got out, it was raining. No car show for me. I waited around for awhile and called a friend that was going to the show, as well. He told me there were about 100 vehicles there and a friend and fellow car club member's band was playing. I just got a new Fender Am. Deluxe Jazz V and wanted to show it off to my buddy in the band, so my wife and I loaded up (not in the '66) and headed to the show. We got there around 12:30 and the band was just taking a break. I took my bass to show it off to my buddy in the band and he asked if I wanted to sit in. I told him no thanks that I didn't come to play, I just wanted him to see the bass. The guys in the band all drooled over it for awhile and I put it back in the Yukon. Then their bass player came up to me and said he had to leave at 2 and they would still have one set to go, could I fill in? Now, who is going to pass up that opportunity? I filled in for him for their last set, doing pretty well for not having played with them in a long time, plus I was probably putting a little extra in to showcase the new bass. Long story short, the guys were really impressed with the tone of the Jazz V and we all enjoyed ourselves. The only problem I encountered was that the gig was outdoors and they had the bass running through a Fender Bassman 60... alone. Needless to say, the amp was overmatched, especially for an outdoor gig. If only I had remembered that I had my DI in the Yukon! Just thought you guys might enjoy the story. All in all, a pretty good Saturday despite the rain. Weatherman says beautiful weather tomorrow and my truck is still clean! Time for a cruise!

That's cool the other bass player let you sit in, for a whole set! There's nothing like having a cool car AND a bass to show off.

No kidding! I was looking forward to the show as it would have been the first one I attended this year. I have actually played with these guys before. They play mostly oldies rock and country, which is why they end up playing at a lot of car shows. Good fun, though it doesn't pay very well. Oh well, not all gigs do. Most of us don't do it for the money, anyway.
